Kansas City has approved $185 million of public funding for the KC Current’s stadium expansion plan in the Riverfront.
The Kansas City Star said the funding commitment is about $50 million less than the city was authorized to provide the women’s soccer team.
It also includes a commitment from the team and its developers to cover the city’s bond debt if tax revenue falls short of paying for it.
The stadium itself would grow from 11,500 seats to 18,000, while the surrounding district would add retail space, parking and infrastructure improvements.
The team intends to add roughly 6,500 new seats in the corners between the existing grandstands.
It will also raise the roofline to add more premium boxes and double the stadium’s suite capacity. The expansion aims to position Kansas City as a high-viability host for major international events, such as the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Men’s Rugby World Cup.
