The city of Al Khobar is preparing for the opening of the Aramco Stadium on December 27th with an international friendly match between the Saudi and the Qatari national teams.

The Aramco Stadium will become a destination for sporting, entertainment and community events.

Saudi Arabia-Qatar Encounter

The Saudi Arabia-Qatar encounter adds further significance to the opening ceremony as it will serve as an operational and spectator-readiness test for the new venue and an opportunity for both the national teams to assess their preparedness ahead of the continental tournament.

Prominent Sports Project

‘bethpress.com’ stated that the occasion will mark both the inauguration of one of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent sports projects and the two teams’ preparations for the 2027 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup finals.

National Teams

The match will take place ahead of the Asian tournament which Saudi Arabia will host from January 7th to February 5th, 2027, with the participation of the national teams from across the continent and matches held in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.

The Aramco Stadium is an under-construction multipurpose stadium located in the North of Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The stadium will have a capacity to hold 47,000 people and is scheduled to host matches for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and the 2034 FIFA World Cup™.

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)-based the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of association football, beach soccer and futsal in most countries and territories in Asia.

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup will be the 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Asia organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The tournament will involve 24 national teams after the expansion in 2019. It will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7th-February 5th, 2027.

The 2034 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 25th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. In December 2024, Saudi Arabia was formally confirmed as the host nation by FIFA following an uncontested bidding process. It will be the third tournament hosted in Asia after South Korea and Japan in 2002 and Qatar in 2022, the third in the Arab world after Qatar in 2022 and Morocco in 2030, and the first since 2022 to be hosted by one nation. Saudi Arabia will be the second host nation from the Arabian Peninsula in the span of 12 years.

Futuristic Arena

‘bethpress.com’ further stated that the Aramco Stadium is one of the major sports projects in the Eastern province with a seating capacity of 47,000 spectators within a complex covering 800,000 square meters. It includes the training facilities, the fan zones, the commercial and entertainment areas, as well as the cooling systems and modern technologies to serve the players and the spectators.

FIFA Fixtures

The Aramco Stadium is scheduled to host matches during the 2027 AFC Asian Cup before participating in hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup™ finals including fixtures in the group stage, Round of 32 and Round of 16.

Community Events

The Aramco Stadium will become the home ground of the Al Qadsiah FC and a destination for sporting, entertainment and community events thus strengthening Al Khobar’s position among the Saudi cities hosting international tournaments.

The Al Qadsiah FC is a Saudi Arabian professional football club based in Khobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. The club competes in the Saudi Pro League, the top tier of the Saudi football league system.

Significant Addition

The stadium’s opening will represent a significant addition to the Eastern province’s sports infrastructure as part of the Kingdom’s preparations to host the Asian and the international tournaments in the coming years.

New and Renovated Stadiums

The Kingdom’s preparations for both the tournaments continue through the construction of new stadiums and the development of the existing facilities, most notably the 58,398-capacity King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh, the 62,345-capacity King Abdullah Sports City Stadium and the 27,000-capacity Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, alongside the other stadiums approved for the Asian Cup.

FIFA Show Stadia

Plans for the 2034 FIFA World Cup™ include 15 stadiums in Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha (city in Saudi Arabia), and NEOM (a mega project and planned city in Tabuk Province in Saudi Arabia), including the 92,760-capacity King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh, the 46,979-capacity Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium in Qiddiya, the 46,010-capacity New Murabba Stadium in Riyadh, and the 45,794-capacity Jeddah Central Development Stadium in Jeddah.
