The American billionaire real estate and sports magnate Stan Kroenke’s sports empire continues to expand and his latest move takes him into Major League Baseball (MLB) (US).

Definitive Agreement

‘yahoo!sports’ stated that the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) announced recently that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the MLB team Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2027 pending customary closing conditions and approval from the Major League Baseball (MLB).

The transaction still requires approval from MLB before it can become official.

If approved, the deal would mark another major expansion for Kroenke whose sports holdings already stretch from Colorado to Los Angeles and across multiple leagues on both sides of the Atlantic.

New York (US)-based the Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball league in North America composed of 30 teams divided equally between the National League (NL) and the American League (AL) with 29 in the United States and one in Canada. The MLB is one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada and is considered the premier baseball league in the world.

The Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) is an American sports and entertainment holding company based in Denver, Colorado (US). The KSE is committed to providing world-class sports and entertainment for both live and broadcast audiences.

The Los Angeles Angels are an American professional baseball team based in Anaheim, California, within the Greater Los Angeles area (US). The Angels compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a Member club of the American League (AL) West Division.

The 45,517-seat Angel Stadium (originally and colloquially known as the Anaheim Stadium) is a ballpark in Anaheim, California, United States. Since its opening 60 years ago in 1966 it has been the home venue of the Major League Baseball (MLB) team Los Angeles Angels.

Powerful Owner

‘yahoo!sports’ further stated that Kroenke is already one of the most powerful owners in professional sports with the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment controlling the National Hockey League (NHL) team Colorado Avalanche, the National Basketball Association (NBA) team Denver Nuggets, the Major League Soccer (MLS) team Colorado Rapids, and the American professional box lacrosse team Colorado Mammoth, along with the National Football League (NFL) team Los Angeles Rams and the English soccer clubs Arsenal F.C. and Arsenal W.F.C. (UK). Under Kroenke’s ownership the Colorado Avalanche have become one of the NHL’s premier franchises winning the Stanley Cup in 2022 and remaining a perennial contender since.

Larger Footprint

The Angels will now become the latest addition to that portfolio. Kroenke’s sports empire stretches across the NHL, the NBA, the NFL, the MLS, the NLL, the Premier League and, pending approval, the MLB. The acquisition also gives the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment an even larger footprint in Southern California.

Massive Development

The Kroenke-affiliated entities own the Los Angeles Rams and developed their home ground – the 70,240-capacity SoFi Stadium and the surrounding 300-acre Hollywood Park District in Inglewood (US). The massive development has become one of the region’s major sports and entertainment destinations and is scheduled to host the Olympic and the Paralympic events in 2028.

The 2028 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad and commonly known as Los Angeles 2028 or LA28, is an upcoming international multisport event scheduled to take place from July 14th-30th, 2028, in the United States. Los Angeles will be the host city with various events also scheduled to be held at the other cities spread across the Greater Los Angeles area plus two subsites in Oklahoma City.

The 2028 Summer Paralympics, also known as the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Paralympic Games, and branded as LA28, will be the 18th edition of the Summer Paralympic Games, an international multisport parasports event. The Games are scheduled to take place from August 15th-27th, 2028, in Los Angeles, California, United States.

Major Franchise

The Los Angeles Angels would give the Kroenke Sports and Entertainment another major franchise in Southern California while extending its reach into Orange County.

‘Storied Franchise’

Commented Kroenke, “The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market. We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”

Right Group

The Moreno family has owned the Los Angeles Angels since 2003. Arte Moreno said the family believes the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment is the right group to lead the franchise into its next chapter.

‘Best Next Owner’

Maintained Moreno, “The Angels Organization is pleased to announce this transaction with the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise.”

KSE Footprint

The Angels would also give Kroenke another team in the Los Angeles market alongside the Rams. With the SoFi Stadium and the Hollywood Park already serving as the centerpiece of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment’s Southern California presence adding an MLB franchise would further cement the organization’s footprint in the region.

Kroenke Sports Empire

For the Avalanche fans the Angels deal is another example of just how large Kroenke’s sports empire has become. What started with a powerful presence in Colorado now extends across some of the biggest markets and leagues in professional sports.

And now, another historic franchise is set to join it.
