Montreal’s Olympic Stadium to undergo renovation

The Government of Quebec has given the green light for the Olympic Park to begin a new phase in modernizing the Montreal Olympic Stadium’s interior.

The Olympic Park said this is a major milestone that will allow the venue to reach its full potential and host a new generation of sporting, cultural, and commercial events.

The 56,040-capacity Olympic Stadium is a multipurpose stadium in Montreal, Canada, located at the Olympic Park in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district of the City.

Built in the mid-1970s as the main venue for the 1976 Summer Olympics, it is nicknamed ‘The Big O’, a reference to both its name and to the doughnut-shape of the permanent component of the stadium’s roof.

The Olympic Park consists of a series of venues and sports arenas in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, which was home to many of the venues from the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Once it is reopened after renovations in 2028, the Montreal Olympic Stadium will offer a revitalized experience for both visitors and the organizations hosting events there.

The goal is to provide Quebec with a multi-purpose venue that meets modern standards and is capable of hosting major sporting, cultural, and corporate events.

This modernization complements the extensive roof replacement project already underway and will help create a lasting transformation of the Montreal Olympic Stadium experience.

The Quebec Government is spending $870 million replacing the decaying roof of the stadium after warning that if nothing was done the sports complex would have to close permanently.

The interior renovation has three key priorities:

Closer to the action: The seating areas will be reconfigured to bring spectators closer to the field of play and provide a more immersive experience, regardless of the event.

A reimagined experience: Interior areas housing key services will undergo significant improvements to offer visitors a more comfortable, seamless, and user-friendly experience.

World-class hospitality areas: Hospitality spaces will be redesigned to offer an experience comparable to that of major stadiums around the world.

The Olympic Park also said discussions are currently underway with professional sports teams and promoters of major international tours who have expressed interest in returning to Montreal once the Stadium reopens.

A hotel project is also being developed on the site to support this transformation. These signals confirm the appeal of a modernized venue located in the heart of a metropolis renowned for hosting major events.

A driving force for Montreal and Quebec

Once modernized, the Montreal Olympic Stadium will help attract more visitors, events, and investment.

According to business plan projections, the economic impact generated by the modernization could reach C$1.5 billion for Quebec over 10 years.

The Olympic Stadium will thus be able to continue playing its role as one of Quebec’s key event venues and as a driver of development for East Montreal.

The new phase of work is part of the ongoing project to replace the Montreal Olympic Stadium’s roof. To date, work on this major project is progressing according to schedule and within the established budget, the Olympic Park said.
