The Cabildo de Gran Canaria, through the Insular Institute of Sports (IID), recently floated a tender for the comprehensive redevelopment and expansion of the Gran Canaria Stadium in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, called the ‘La Nube’ project.
Following the expansion work the capacity of the stadium will increase to 44,020 spectators.
‘La Nube’ Tender Exercise
The tender exercise will not be exclusively by price, which will have a weight of 45 percent in the valuation, but through an award system based on the best value for money. The objective criteria will account for 75 percent of the total score and will include, in addition to the economic offer, the reduction of the execution deadlines and the technical improvements proposed for key elements of the enclosure including the roof, the façades, or the VIP seats.
‘laprovincia.es’ stated that the price tag for the restyling and expansion of the Gran Canaria Stadium has been pegged at 174.7 million euros and it will transform the venue to meet international standards and will also be readied for the 2030 World Cup.
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria is the primary governing and administrative body of Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands. Originally established under the Spanish Law of Cabildos of 1912 its democratically elected representatives manage the local affairs such as the infrastructure, tourism, the public transportation, and the environment.
The Insular Sports Institute (Instituto Insular de Deportes or IID) is the primary Governmental sports authority of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain. It is responsible for managing the public sports infrastructure, promoting the island-wide health programs and funding the grassroots sports clubs.
The 32,392-seat Gran Canaria Stadium is a football stadium in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. It is currently used for football matches and is home to the Segunda División club UD Las Palmas. It opened in 2003 as a multipurpose stadium.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 24th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain. It would be the first across the Mediterranean Sea. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup™ in 1930 a special match and centennial celebration will be held at the 60,235-capacity Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay – host stadium of the 1930 Final.
‘La Nube’
The above project is called ‘La Nube’ and the design studio L35 Architects won the competition to dress up the Gran Canaria Stadium. Once the redecoration of the facility is over it will provide an enthralling experience to the fans and the capacity expansion will help it to stage major sporting and cultural acts.
The La Nube (The Cloud) project is an ambitious renovation and expansion design by L35 Architects aimed at transforming the Grand Canaria Stadium. Its goal is to create a sustainable, state-of-the-art sporting landmark ready to host matches for the 2030 FIFA World Cup™.
The L35 Architects is an international architecture, urbanism and design firm with offices in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Milano, Miami, Mexico, Bogotá, Santiago, Istanbul, and Abu Dhabi. Founded in 1967, L35’s practice covers a myriad of architectural forms and projects both large and complex among which are several office buildings and corporate headquarters, residential complexes, large shopping and leisure centers, mixed-use developments, sports stadiums, and urban developments.
‘Transparency Key’
Antonio Morales, President of Cabildo de Gran Canaria, said that transparency will be the nub of the Gran Canaria Stadium rejig.
Three-phase Remodeling
The remodeling of the arena will be in three phases. The First Phase will entail the demolition work which has already begun and is progressing as per schedule.
Informed Aridany Romero, Minister of Sports of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Island Sports Institute, “The revamp of the facility is a collective project which involves the institutions, the political representatives, the businessmen, the media, and the civil society.”
‘laprovincia.es’ further stated that the Second Phase will involve the tendering of the contract and will entail the construction of a new roof, the capacity expansion of the venue from the current 32,418 to 44,020 spectators, structural improvements, the complete renovation of the facilities, ease of ingress and egress, top priority to the safety quotient of the stadium, and making it chic to host international football matchups.
The Third Phase will involve adding tech bells and whistles to the stadium. To provide tech teeth to the venue big tech companies have been involved to put in place an advanced communications network with high-density Wi-Fi coverage, the data systems that allow to offer digital services to the fans, state-of-the-art light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and a new video marker adapted to the demands of the large international sporting events.
Architectural Marvel
Romero remarked that the revamped arena will be an architectural marvel.
Sustainability Key
The sustainability element will be accorded topmost priority in the ‘La Nub’ project. One of the objectives will be to get the energy rating A and minimum emissions, incorporating advanced energy efficiency solutions and renewable energy systems. The sustainability factor will be so integrated into the stadium that it will become a reference point when environmental issues arise in the venue industry.

The reduction of the lead time from 36 to 30 months will be scored on the award. The tender will be carried out through an open procedure subject to European harmonised regulation (SARA – a legal label applied to public works) thus ensuring maximum competition, transparency and free competition between the companies concerned. Once the works have been awarded the expected execution period will be 36 months, however, the reduction of the term to 30 months will constitute an award criterion susceptible to valuation.
The companies interested in the contract have until July 7th, 2026, at 12.00 hours to submit offers through the State Recruitment Platform.
