The Taichung city Government officially inked a NT$60 billion (US$1.85 billion) build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract with the Taiwan Life Insurance Company on October 16th, 2026, to construct the Taichung Super Dome in Taiwan.

Major Fillip

The Taichung Super Dome is a planned 45,000-seat multifunctional domed stadium and entertainment complex in Taichung City, Taiwan. Once completed, it will prove to be a major fillip for baseball in Taiwan.

Limited Budget

Taking into consideration the city Government’s limited budget the venue project has adopted a privately-funded (BOT) project designation model.

Sports-Leisure Complex

‘taichung.gov.tw’ stated that located in the Shuinan development zone in the Xitun district of Taichung, Taiwan, the sports and leisure complex will feature a 45,000-seat dome, two hotels and a major shopping mall. According to the Taichung city Government, the complex is expected to open in 2031.

Development Project

It is the largest single sports venue development project in Taiwan and the Taichung Super Dome will be built into an international-class indoor baseball stadium that can accommodate 45,000 spectators.

New Chapter

‘taichung.gov.tw’ further stated that the Mayor of Taichung Lu Shiow-yen, who was present at the signing ceremony, said that in addition to hosting the international baseball games the Taichung Super Dome will also host major music acts and cultural events. Once completed, it will become the largest indoor baseball stadium in Taiwan thus opening a new chapter for Taichung’s sports and performance industries.

Proactive Role

Mayor Shiow-yen informed that Taichung lacked a large indoor stadium capable of accommodating over 10,000 people thus leading to many sporting events to either utilize the existing vocational school facilities or be relocated to other counties or cities. She, therefore, decided to build a stadium for the people of Taichung with a capacity to accommodate 10,000 spectators. To this end, the city Government played a proactive role in planning and promoting this major construction project. A team also visited the international venues in Japan, such as the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome and the 35,000-seat Es Con Field Hokkaido, to take pages out of their venue books.

Keen Interest

Mayor Shiow-yen added that Taichung’s pleasant climate and it enjoying the reputation as the ‘baseball capital’ of Taiwan have evinced keen interest among the local companies. The city Government team set up a cross-departmental project team and completed all legal procedures in just over a year.

Urban Core

The Super Dome will not only serve as an international-class baseball stadium but will also connect the commercial, accommodation, dining, and entertainment spaces to create a new urban core.

Multifarious Venue

The Taichung City Sports Bureau Director Yu Chih-hsiang pointed out that the Taichung Super Dome will be built in accordance with the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) standards and it will be constructed to withstand the weather elements thus making the stadium well-positioned to attract major events. It will be a multifarious venue and will boast a smooth transportation network for which the Taichung city is already known for. It will be a spiffy facility and will attract visitors not only from all over Taiwan but also from other places of the globe.

Catalyst

Once the Taiwan Super Dome is completed it will serve as a catalyst for Taiwan baseball to reach dizzying heights of success.
