The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team defeated the Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball team in the D1 college basketball season openers on November 1st with final scores of 74-72 for the men’s game and 99-75 for the women’s.

The fans, students, faculty, staff, and alumni from the Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame filled Rome’s Palazzo dello Sport, a massive arena that seats more than 11,000, to cheer on their men’s and women’s teams.

Faith-based Traditions

‘BIGEAST CONFERENCE’ stated that the Eternal City Tip-Off games, held in Rome, pitted two schools with “shared faith-based traditions and championship pedigrees” against each other in the historically Catholic capital of Italy.

Villanova-Notre Dame Matchup

The Villanova/Notre Dame matchup is the first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I regular season contest to be played in Italy. Additionally, it is the first regular season NCAA Division I men’s basketball game to be played in Europe since December 4th, 2022. On that date in London (UK) the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team (the men’s college basketball team of the University of Kentucky) defeated the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team (the intercollegiate men’s basketball program representing the University of Michigan), 73-69, and the Marist Red Foxes men’s basketball team (the basketball team that represents the Marist University in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States) snuck past the Maine Black Bears men’s basketball team (the basketball team that represents the University of Maine in Orono, Maine, United States), 62-61, in a doubleheader at the 20,000-seat The O2 Arena as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase.

The Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase is a premier early-season college basketball event organized by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (an American history museum and Hall of Fame located in Springfield, Massachusetts) to promote the sport internationally outside of the United States.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program representing the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, United States.

The Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball program represents the Villanova University (Pennsylvania) in men’s college basketball.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates the student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States and one in Canada. It also organizes the athletic programs of the colleges and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in the college sports. The headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

NCAA Basketball Games

‘BIGEAST CONFERENCE’ further stated that in total, 25 NCAA Division I men’s basketball games (the top-tier level of intercollegiate men’s basketball competition governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the United States) have been played in Europe, including games at the Ramstein AFB (Germany) and in the cities of Belfast (Northern Ireland), Dublin (Ireland), and London (England). Villanova is the first BIG EAST school to play a regular season men’s basketball game in Europe.
