    The legendary Camp Nou Stadium is like a jewel in the crown of Barcelona in Spain. It ranks among Barcelona’s top tourist attractions. The whole tourism angle is intertwined with the game of football.

    The Camp Nou Stadium opened in 1957 and has been the home stadium of FC Barcelona since its completion. With a seating capacity of 99,354, it is the largest stadium in Spain and Europe, and the fourth largest football stadium in the world in capacity.

    The swathe of changes includes an upgrade of Wi-Fi technology to support the surge in data usage, improvements in VIP hospitality services and an increase in capacity by 6,000 seats. The changes are also focused on improving the quality of the stadium as well as the quantity of seats.

    The under-construction soccer-specific West End Stadium in Ohio, US, is set to go on stream on March 1, 2021. The innovative facility will be the new home of FC Cincinnati – the American professional soccer club based in Cincinnati. In this plenary, Jeff Berding will give a rundown on the challenges faced while constructing a new venue – prime among them being acquiring land, bringing a contractor on board who can take up a project of huge size, streamlining the parking spot, and getting the funding. Stadium design is not just about nuts and bolts, but the real challenge lies in generating an atmosphere inside the arena and creating an unrivaled experience for spectators with a striking design.

    Berding will also hold up a detail picture of how bringing a Major League Soccer team to a heartland US city – Ohio – in four years record time is fraught with challenges. The whole development would include amenities like bars and restaurants, a hotel, food market and a cultural institution.     He will also deliberate on how Vector Foiltec completed the roof of the luxuriant Allegiant Stadium, the new home of the Las Vegas Raiders. Nolan will elaborate on Vector Foiltec’s design and delivery, which were divided into various phases starting with Design Assist where the overall concept, cushion sizes, and structural system were defined. The stadium project was a roaring success and the Raiders won their home opener under an ETFE roof that was completed ahead of schedule.

    In the Fall of 2021 Climate Pledge Arena, a $1 billion 18,000-seat state of the art sports and entertainment venue will open as the home of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Seattle Kraken and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Seattle Storm. Located at Seattle Center in downtown Seattle, Climate Pledge Arena will become the first net zero carbon arena in the world and set a new sustainability bar for the sports and entertainment history.

    Steve Collins will also discuss about the building’s design and sustainability features and the road to net zero carbon, including the process of preserving the 44 million ton landmarked roof while excavating over 600,000 cubic yards of material and constructing the brand new 800,000 sq ft arena underneath. He will walk us through some of the unique sustainability elements including the buildings 100 percent electric operation powered with 100 percent renewable electricity, the use of reclaimed water in the ice system to create the greenest ice in NHL, and the unique partnership with Amazon to inspire climate action.

    At a time of heightened risks, security of venues and the safety of fans have become paramount. Sports venues are targets of opportunity. Here, we discuss the steps to protect venues from the new bad guys. How to react in case of a bomb threat for instance? We also attempt to differentiate between safety (crowd management) and security (crowd control). How can modern IT support safety and security? Is your training sufficient? Does it train staff on today’s threats and not those of yesterdays?

    COVID-19 has also thrown up the biggest challenge to the sports venue sector. Sooner or later, fans will come back into stadiums but will be apprehensive about the novel coronavirus till a vaccine is found. In this segment, we will discuss how social distancing norms will have to be strictly imposed in stadia, and how entry/exit protocols in and out of the venue should be touchless and in the form of biometrics. How will futuristic technology facilitate contactless service?

    We will also deliberate how enhanced sanitation and safety will have to be priorities in venues and how sports and entertainment venues should adopt mobile ordering and order-ahead capabilities for foodservices with designated pickup times. In a COVID-19 world, crowding around a food or drink counters is no longer acceptable and a scenario could arrive when food will be given in packets to spectators keeping in mind the health factor of both players and supporters.
