In this assembly, Chris Roberts will speak at length on the University of Idaho 4,200-capacity ICCU Arena in Moscow, Idaho, US, which is a fully integrated design envisioned to redefine the college arena typology through the use of Mass Timber. It began with the idea that a university arena could be a place of community, highly sustainable, light-filled, warm, inviting, and unique to the university’s context and campus culture.

He will further highlight that as a research university with one of the nation’s leading Forestry and Natural Resources Departments, the institution set a goal for the project to become a national showcase and learning laboratory for the innovative use of Mass Timber developed through a process of working collaboratively with forest products industry partners. Constructed with 50,000 cubic feet of wood that sequesters 1,200 metric tons of CO2, the project avoided 500 metric tons of CO2 as compared to conventional arena construction. This design strategy minimizes environmental impact, invigorates local economies and delivers a beautiful landmark for the region.

What are returning fans demanding from our venues?

The Aspire Group - topic visualImage: World Rugby

The Aspire Group is a global sports and entertainment firm partnering with clients to maximize revenue, people and organizational performance. As industry leaders, they create the best practices of tomorrow.

In this congress, Bernie Mullin will talk on how fans are generally all back in the venues with few exceptions and many new fans have joined them. The thrill of in-person attendance with like-minded people appears to be as strong, if not stronger than ever. But what patterns are we seeing that’s different?

First, many fans have continued the move away from season tickets with smaller/fewer home matches in the packages being demanded. Second, after a couple of years away from venues many fans have gotten use to more information and more camera angles on their broadcasts or streaming and that presents new challenges to meet that experience for in-game entertainment operations.

He will finally reflect on how fans have significantly increased their comfort with online ordering and purchasing during the pandemic to the point where they have become more sophisticated, more discriminatory and more demanding. Digital ticketing and contactless payment is even more ubiquitous.

Consequently, the biggest impact is being revealed in the food and beverage concession offerings that now need to be more exciting to meet the changing tastes of people who broadened their outlooks in the pandemic, many in their own backyards or in tight social/community spaces, where communal eating, albeit slightly less packed, has grown even more.

Venues require large capital investments and are expected to produce a substantial return on investment (ROI). In addition to the initial investment, operating stadiums and arenas require year-round capital expenditure. How does a successful asset management plan work in such a scenario? Does a venue need ISO or LEED certifications? How to solve the parking headaches? Making sense of IPTV ROI

    VITEC - topic visualImage: VITEC

VITEC is a market-leading provider of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), Video Streaming and Digital Signage Solutions that help organizations harness the power of video to engage, empower and evolve.

In this conference, Bryan Reksten will talk on how fan engagement is high on the list of priorities for every venue, but the cost of technology upgrades can make the investment difficult to justify. Whether a venue is looking to upgrade their legacy tech or building out an entirely new venue, it is important to prioritize investments that will both improve the fan experience and also offer new revenue generating opportunities.

Reksten will also share how VITEC developed an ROI tool to help venues quantify existing and new revenue models that could be deployed with an IPTV and Digital Signage platform. Many Facility Directors and IT Administrators recognize the advantage of leveraging their network to distribute video and signage through their venue, but they are challenged in justifying the investment to senior leadership. VITEC developed a simple-to-use ROI tool that can be customized to factor in types of events, capacity and rate card to show the impact of deploying an updated IPTV solution.

He will also share some examples of how the ROI tool has helped venues explore sponsorship opportunities, beyond just digital signage, to begin to monetize targeted areas like video walls, premium loge seating and mobile apps.

    The USL big picture

United Soccer League - topic visualImage: Lexington

The United Soccer League (USL) is the largest and fastest-growing professional soccer organization in North America, possessing more than a decade of experience bringing the world’s game to communities across the United States and Canada. Overseeing the USL Championship (USSF Division II), USL League One (USSF Division III) and USL League Two (Pre-Professional), the organization is built on a proven and recognized model in international football and counts more than 125 clubs in its membership.

In this conference, keynote speaker Justin Papadakis will wax eloquent on how USL is the fastest growing professional soccer organization on the continent. Last season, over 80 countries were represented by the players in the USL. The league has global media rights deals, with games airing in over 60 countries and territories across Central and South America, the Caribbean and Italy. The USL is also beginning to see its teams becoming more present in the global player transfer market, with USL clubs transferring players to top leagues in Spain, France and Denmark within the last six months alone.

He will also talk about the future goals of USL - aiming to have upwards of 80 professional clubs within the next three to four years across a professional women’s league and two professional men’s leagues, and looking to build 25-30 new soccer stadiums in that same timeframe.

Conference stream: Venue HEALTH, SAFETY & SECURITY

At a time of heightened risks, security of venues and the safety of fans have become paramount. Sports venues are targets of opportunity. Here, we discuss the steps to protect venues from the new bad guys. How to react in case of a bomb threat for instance? We also attempt to differentiate between safety (crowd management) and security (crowd control). How can modern IT support safety and security? Is your training sufficient? Does it train staff on today’s threats and not those of yesterdays?

COVID-19 has also thrown up the biggest challenge to the sports venue sector. Fans have come back into the stadia fold but with the various virus variants rearing their ugly heads, venues will have to adopt stringent COVID-19 protocols and leave nothing to chance for the greater safety and security of spectators. In this segment, we will discuss how social distancing norms will have to be strictly imposed in stadia, and how entry/exit protocols in and out of the venue should be touchless and in the form of biometrics. How will futuristic technology facilitate contactless service?

We will also deliberate how enhanced sanitation and safety will have to be priorities in venues and how sports and entertainment venues should adopt mobile ordering and order-ahead capabilities for foodservices with designated pickup times. In a COVID-19 world, crowding around a food or drink counters is no longer acceptable and a scenario could arrive when food will be given in packets to spectators keeping in mind the health factor of both players and supporters.

Topic visual 2022 - Patriot One TechnologiesImage: Getty Images

Patriot One Technologies Inc. provides software solutions. The company offers platform for threat detection solutions, as well as develops radar technologies to detect concealed weapons.

David Sawler will reflect on how state-of-the-art venues are being constructed around the world, and patron experience is higher than ever before on operators’ priority lists, why then are we still accepting pat-downs and long lines greeting pumped up fans who are ready to start their event experiences?

Sawler will further reflect on how to date, security processes have come at the cost of the fan experience. Traditionally, this compromise for securing venues and events was acceptable, but the movement towards frictionless experience demands a change. How can technology play a part in that? Is there a security solution that can not just maintain but also enhance the patron experience? Could it increase the speed of patron entry, time spent inside, customer spend, and patron satisfaction?

He will discuss the leaps in technology and the ripple effect on business, including the possibility of making security a traditional cost center, a profit center.

Conference stream: BRAND Development & AUDIOVISUAL Solutions

    BRAND Development

Over the years, branding has become one of the core strategies of any business. It plays a pivotal role in marketing and business development. In the field of stadium business, it isn’t the stadium alone that needs brand development. In fact, much of the branding strategy involves the sports clubs that the stadiums represent. As clubs go about increasingly looking for international investors, the focus on brand visibility seems to have gained prominence.

Most clubs these days employ a strong squad of international business development professionals in a bid to come up with innovative and unique branding solutions. After all, branding could be the key difference between striking a deal or losing one. Ultimately, the stadium business sector becomes the true beneficiary of such branding exercise. The new funding and revenues generated by brand development is eventually ploughed back into building training grounds and new stadiums.

    AUDIOVISUAL Solutions

No longer is it enough for fans to come to a stadium, sit in a seat and watch a game or other event. Venues face competition from fans’ own homes, where they have high-definition TVs and easy access to snacks, beverages and other amenities. To get fans on the door, sports teams and venues must offer much more than a game; they need to deliver a compelling experience. New audiovisual (AV) technologies are the foundation of modern fan engagement.

A wide range of AV solutions is essential to these efforts. Stadiums and arenas are employing massive video boards as the centerpiece of many venues, giving fans a central place to focus their attention when it’s not on the action. Video walls, ribbons and individual displays, advanced audio systems, mobile applications — even next-generation technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) — are coming into play. The use cases for these technologies vary just as widely. In addition to providing in-house entertainment for fans, they are used for wayfinding, advertising, digital menus, fan information, even security.

    Conference stream: Venue DESTINATION

Sports sell places. How do you ensure that the spectators come to the venue earlier, stay longer, have more fun and in the process help generate more revenue? Many stadiums nowadays are conceptualized as destinations - for visitors and the neighborhood, the so-called community stadiums. These stadiums will have to respond to local needs else they will never make profit. Stadiums are more than just a place to watch the game. Involving theme parks is bound to add value to the best practices and experiences for destination creation.

The ‘Greatest Stadium in the World’: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Tour visual speaker 2022 - Los Angeles Memorial ColiseumImage: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Joe Furin will present in this summit as to how the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is known as ‘The Greatest Stadium in the World’, a living memorial to all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I, the facility has been a civic treasure for generations of Angelenos. The legacy of events and individuals hosted in nine-plus-decades reads like no other: The only venue to host two Summer Olympics (Xth Olympiad in 1932, XXIIIrd Olympiad in 1984) and soon a third (XXXIVth Olympiad in 2028), home to college football’s USC Trojans since 1923 and the UCLA Bruins (1933-1981), professional football’s Los Angeles Rams (1946-1979 and 2016-2019), Raiders (1982-1994) and Chargers (1960), hosted three National Football League (NFL) Championships and two Super Bowls, home to the Major League Baseball (MLB) team Los Angeles Dodgers (1958-1960) and the 1959 World Series, appearances by US Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, and international dignitaries such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, Pope John Paul II, the Dalai Lama, and Nelson Mandela. From Mick Jagger to the Harlem Globetrotters, the Grateful Dead to Billy Graham, Evel Knievel to Pele, the Memorial Coliseum, named a National and California Historic Landmark in 1984, has been the stage for the unbelievable, the unforgettable, the iconic, and the best in human endeavor and achievement.

On March 29th, 2008, the LA Dodgers and their peer team the Boston Red Sox set a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance ever at a baseball game with a crowd of 115,300. Other historic events include American evangelist Billy Graham’s appearance in 1963 in front of 134,254 (still an all-time Coliseum record), Nelson Mandela’s 1990 triumphant return to the United States, the first ever Papal Mass by Pope John Paul II in 1987, and the 1976 Bicentennial Spectacular. The Coliseum has hosted decades of memorable concerts including a ‘who’s-who’ listing of some of rock-n-roll’s greatest artistes: English rock bands The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, Irish rock band U2, American heavy metal band Metallica, and more!

Known also for hosting soccer competitions, the Coliseum has been the site of more than 500 memorable matches. In fact, the all-time Coliseum attendance record for a soccer match was set on July 26th, 2017, as 93,098 fans turned out to see LaLiga team Real Madrid CF (Spain) take on the Premier League club Manchester City F.C. in the International Champions Cup. As the Coliseum nears closer to its centennial in 2023, Furin will inform the gathering how they look forward to seeing what the next 100 years has in store for them here at ‘The Greatest Stadium in the World’!
