John Schmalz - Senior Project Manager, PCL Construction, US

John Schmalz

John, as a second generation PCLer with strong family ties to the company and its history, grew up discussing construction and general contracting around the dinner table. Prior to joining PCL, John worked in commercial agriculture and, in 2010, began working for a business that fabricated and supplied greenhouse structures and M+E systems. Unable to resist the call of PCL, John joined in 2011 as a field engineer on the complex MaRS Discovery District Phase 2 project. Excelling in his work, John was promoted to construction coordinator in 2012 while still on the MaRS project. In 2014, John transferred to the Special Projects division, where he was promoted to project manager focused on delivering data center/hub projects including Rogers Intelligent Capacity Centers in Bolton and Mississauga and the Teranet Data Centre, rated Tier III by the Uptime Institute. John continued to complete numerous complex, fast paced projects in PCL’s Special Projects department followed by taking on a lead role in 2018 at PCL Agile – an off-site facility focused on modular construction.

In 2021, for the province of Ontario on the Accelerated Build Pilot Program, John played a leadership role in the development and implementation of a unique hybrid modular solution which delivered the 448,000SF Lakeridge Gardens Long-Term Care facility in just 13 months of construction. The success of this project is a testament to John’s ability to focus his energy on the aspects of a project that make the most impact for PCL’s Clients.

Most recently, leveraging previous experience with the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club, John has helped lead the PCL team through the planning, budgeting, scheduling and execution of both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Rogers Centre Renovation Project. Providing budget and schedule guidance in pre-construction followed by adherence to budget during project buyout, John’s focus on critical deadlines and the need to complete all disruptive work during the off season led to successful completion of the Phase 1 project in 2023 and the Phase 2 project in 2024, both within 6-month off-season timelines.

As project manager, John’s strengths are his adaptability and ability to learn and absorb information quickly as evidenced by his seamless transition from his B.Eng. in Aerospace Engineering, to the commercial agriculture sector, to the construction industry with a focus on building systems, to modular construction and to his current role.

John has a keen mind for absorbing the technical information required to effectively manage a complex scope of work or a project. When thrown into a problem, or a difficult situation, John’s critical thinking skills learned in engineering and his diverse work experiences empower him as a rapid strategic thinker and PCL ‘Solution Provider.’
