The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is ending its partnership with Saudi Arabia to host the season-ending Finals a year early with the tournament to move to Indian Wells in California (US).

The ongoing tension between Iran and the United States is reported to be the reason behind the tournament moving to Indian Wells.

The event, featuring the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the year, will now take place in Indian Wells from November 8th-15th.

‘BBC SPORT’ stated that the tournament has been held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) for the past two years after the WTA signed a three-year agreement with the Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) in April 2024, a deal that included record prize money.

But the final year of the agreement has been terminated by mutual consent after the STF accepted the WTA’s request to stage this year’s Finals elsewhere.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women’s professional tennis. The association governs the WTA Tour, which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women, and was founded to create a better future for women’s tennis. The WTA’s corporate headquarters are in St. Petersburg, Florida (US) with its European headquarters in London (UK) and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing (China).

The Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) is the official governing body for the sport in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Established in 1975, it operates from Riyadh and is tasked with promoting the sport, fostering the grassroots talent and building the infrastructure to position tennis as one of the nation’s premier athletics programs.

‘BBC SPORT’ further stated that the ongoing tension between Iran and the United States has made planning for the Finals more challenging and is one reason why the contract has ended one year early.

Valerie Camillo, Chair of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), said this year’s event at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden allows the organization to “continue building one of the premier championships in global sport. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden provides an exceptional stage for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals. From its world-class facilities and the passionate fan base to its proven ability to deliver premier tennis events the venue offers everything needed to showcase the very best of women’s tennis.”

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is a tennis facility in Indian Wells, near Palm Springs, California, in the Coachella Valley (US). The 16,100-capacity Stadium 1 is the largest stadium at the tennis complex and the second-largest outdoor tennis stadium in the world (after the 23,771-capacity Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York city at the US Open).

Indian Wells already hosts WTA events at the BNP Paribas Open in March.

The Indian Wells Open or the BNP Paribas Open (for sponsorship reasons) is an annual professional tennis tournament held in Indian Wells, California, United States. It is played on outdoor hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and is held in March.

When the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) decided to take the Finals to Saudi Arabia in 2024 the decision was met with significant backlash.

However, the WTA Chief Executive Steve Simon defended the decision saying that by choosing Riyadh women’s tennis would be “supporting significant change being made within the region. The WTA has been breaking down barriers for more than 50 years. We want to create more opportunities for the women to play tennis at the elite level and I think by doing this we believe that we can inspire more women and girls to get involved with the sport. We are a global sport. The WTA now has all of these events and people from around the world that do reflect different cultures and systems.”

Saudi Arabia won the rights to host the event after the WTA assessed “multiple bids from different regions” and evaluated potential hosts on three criteria including support for the organization’s ambition to achieve equal prize money for women.
