Major League Soccer’s (MLS) San Jose Earthquakes have broken their all-time club attendance record in a match at Levi’s Stadium in the U.S., while FC Bayern Women have also hit a new high in Germany.

The Mercury News said the Earthquakes attracted a crowd of 50,978 breaking their all-time standalone record of 50,850, set on June 29, 2019, when San Jose beat the LA Galaxy 3-0 at Stanford Stadium.

The 68,500 capacity Levi’s Stadium is an American football stadium located in Santa Clara, California, United States, just west of the much larger city of San Jose, in the San Francisco Bay Area. It has served as the home venue for the National Football League (NFL)’s San Francisco 49ers since 2014.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is a men’s professional soccer league sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation which represents the sport’s highest level in the United States.

The league comprises 29 teams – 26 in the United States and 3 in Canada – since the 2023 season. The MLS is headquartered in Midtown Manhattan.

With the most recent Cali Clasico on June 28 against the Galaxy drawing 42,881 fans at Stanford as well, the Quakes hosted two of the eight highest-attended regular-season matches in all MLS this season.

Atlanta United attracted the biggest crowd of the season so far when 65,520 were inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium to see them take on CF Montreal.

FC Bayern Women smash record

Meanwhile in Germany FC Bayern Women have also broken records at the start of the new Bundesliga season.

They enjoyed a 2-0 win at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in front of 57,762 fans at the Allianz Arena – a new record attendance in German women’s club football.

The attendance smashed the previous Bundesliga high of 38,365 at the meeting between 1. FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt in April 2023.

The German attendance record for a club encounter, previously held by Hamburger SV and SV Werder Bremen with 57,000 at their DFB Cup match, was also broken.

What’s particularly remarkable is that FCB Women more than doubled their existing club record, set in the Champions League game against FC Barcelona in 2022 (24,000).

Bianca Rech, FC Bayern Women director said, “The new attendance record in national women’s football is much more than just an impressive figure – it is a clear sign of how much interest and enthusiasm for women’s football has grown in Germany.

“This record speaks volumes about the passion of the fans and the energy that now reigns in the stadiums. We had a vision! Together with the club and our incredibly dedicated staff, we have managed to set a milestone for women’s football at FC Bayern Munich. We are very proud of this and very grateful for it.

“Women’s football is much more than just a sport – it is a movement that sets new standards and brings people together, regardless of their origin or gender. We would like to thank all the fans, players and officials who made this milestone possible and look forward to many more unforgettable moments on and off the pitch.”
