Highest attendance during T20 cricket in India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced recently that they had entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest attendance during a T20 match. A feat they achieved during the final of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat (India).

‘The Indian Express’ stated that the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah took to Twitter to share details of the same, “Extremely delighted and proud to receive the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a T20 match when 101,566 people witnessed the epic @IPL final at @GCAMotera’s magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium on 29 May 2022. A big thanks to our fans for making this possible! @BCCI.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the national governing body for cricket in India. Its headquarters are situated at the Cricket Centre, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India.

The Indian Premier League, also known as TATA IPL for sponsorship reasons, is a men’s T20 franchise cricket league of India. It is annually contested by 10 teams based out of seven Indian Cities and three Indian States. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.

The Narendra Modi Stadium is a cricket stadium situated in Ahmedabad, India. It is the largest stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators. Owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association, it is a venue for Test, ODI, T20I, and Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches.

‘The Indian Express’ further stated that inaugurated in February 2021, the newly refurbished Motera venue hosted the second qualifier as well as the final of the 15th season of IPL in May this year.

The stadium, constructed in 1982, earlier had a seating capacity of housing 49,000 fans. Since 2021, the venue has also hosted 10 international matches across formats, including two Test matches against England (UK), one of which was also only the second pink ball Test played in India.

With the 2023 World Cup in India next year, the venue is likely to be a favorite to host the final.
