The Norwegian professional football Bodø/Glimt has revealed plans to build a stunning new £90 million stadium bordering the Arctic Circle.
‘THE SUN’ stated that the Norwegian club are flying high after winning four of the last five league titles while also becoming the European regulars.
The Fotballklubben Bodø/Glimt, also referred to as the Bodø/Glimt, or its former name Glimt, is a Norwegian professional football club from the town of Bodø in the Bodø Municipality, Nordland County, Norway. The club currently plays in the Eliteserien, the top division of the Norwegian Men’s football league system. The club was founded in 1916.
The Aspmyra Stadion is a football stadium in the town of Bodø, Norway. It serves as the home field of the Bodø/Glimt and has a capacity to accommodate 8,270 spectators.
The Arctic Circle is one of the two polar circles and the Northernmost of the five major circles of latitude as shown on maps of the Earth at about 66° 34’ N. Its Southern counterpart is the Antarctic Circle.
‘THE SUN’ further stated that the Glimt are now set to take on the likes of the Premier League teams Manchester City F.C. and the Tottenham Hotspur F.C. and the LaLiga team Atlético Madrid (Spain) in their first-ever Champions League Group Stage.
The Bodø/Glimt qualified for the league phase of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League (an annual football [soccer] competition organized by the UEFA for the top-tier European club teams) for the first time in 2025 becoming the Northernmost team to ever play in that stage of the competition.
Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan, as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Since 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and the UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.
But the Bodø/Glimt chiefs want to take advantage of the club’s recent upturn by building a stunning new stadium.
A total of 192 out of 193 Members voted in favor of a new 10,000-seat arena to replace the top-flight’s current home ground.
The Bodø/Glimt has been playing at the 8,270-capacity Aspmyra Stadion since 1966.
Yet those at the top feel the best way to drive the club into the future is by playing at a new stadium.
The massive project will cost a whopping £90m to complete.
And it’s reckoned the Bodø/Glimt will be able to start playing there two years from now with the stadium set to be called the Arctic Arena.
It certainly marks an exciting period in the club’s history.
2020’s title win (the Bodø/Glimt finished as champions of the Eliteserien for the first time) saw them become the Northernmost European club to win a national league competition.
And their presence inside the infamously cold Arctic Circle could help to attract more tourists to both the new stadium and the Bodø (town in Norway) itself.
Incredible concept pictures of the planned arena were also revealed to the Members.
They revealed an incredibly modern stadium also retaining its links to the past home ground.
And with a Champions League debut on the horizon the supporters are sure to currently be in dreamland.
