Before the regular season kicks off for the National Football League (NFL) team Buffalo Bills the natural grass field at their home – the brand-new Highmark Stadium in New York (US) – will have been replaced.

The Buffalo Bills are already going to replace their natural grass turf at their new stadium which just opened in 2026.

The full installation of the new surface is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

The Buffalo Bills kick off their 2026 NFL regular season on September 13th, 2026, against their peer team – the Houston Texans – at the latter’s home ground – the 72,220-seat Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas (US).

‘wivb.com’ stated that the Buffalo Bills will square off against their peer team the Detroit Lions on Sept 17th and it will be the first regular season game played at their brand-new Highmark Stadium.

The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan area. The Bills compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a Member of the American Football Conference (AFC) East Division. The team plays its home games at the Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York (US).

The 60,108-seat Highmark Stadium is an American football stadium located in Orchard Park, New York, a suburb of Buffalo (US). It opened in 2026 and serves as the home field of the NFL team Buffalo Bills.

Resod

‘wivb.com’ further stated that the Buffalo Bills President Pete Guelli said in part that the team is “committed to having the best possible surface for our players”. He said with three consecutive home games early in the season they decided it was an appropriate time to resod.

Peeled Up

The Kentucky bluegrass at the stadium was peeled up revealing the surface below. A green tractor was doing laps and the sprinklers were going.

Monitor Field

Guelli said in part, “We will continue to monitor the field and every aspect of our new stadium to ensure it is the best possible experience for our players and the fans.”

Natural Grass

Natural grass was a major change for the new stadium. The team previously played on an artificial turf field across the street. There systems in place to support the natural grass. That includes a drainage system to pump and remove the air and the water. A heating system has also been installed to keep the grass growing through winter.
