Construction has kicked off on a new 10,000 capacity multipurpose arena at a former city gas plant site in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan.

The Nation said the arena, which is being built by Mitsui Fudosan Co., Toyota Tsusho Corp. and KDDI Corp., should be completed in 2027 for an opening scheduled for early 2028.

The arena will serve as the home court for the Fighting Eagles Nagoya Toyota, a professional basketball team owned by Toyota Tsusho, a trading house. It will also host concerts and exhibitions.

KDDI will cooperate in the project using its telecommunications technology, with the goal of creating cutting-edge, technologically advanced sports experiences.

The arena will be built in a redevelopment area that already houses condominium buildings and a shopping mall run by a unit of Mitsui Fudosan, a real estate firm.

Toyota Tsusho, who also owns the Fighting Eagles, is a partner in the project.

The construction is driven by the Japanese B. League’s requirement for top-tier teams to have an arena with a minimum capacity of 5,000 seats for its new top division in 2026.

Currently, the Fighting Eagles Nagoya play at the Biwajima Sports Center.

The B.League is a men’s professional basketball league in Japan. The league is operated by the Japan Professional Basketball League and was formed as a result of a merger between the National Basketball League and the independently operated bj league. The league began play in September 2016.

The new arena is designed to offer next-generation sports experiences by integrating cutting-edge technology.

The project also aims to support community vitality by reducing waste and incorporating sustainable practices.

The scheme is also part of Mitsui Fudosan’s strategy to expand into new asset classes and strengthen its presence in the Chubu region.
