German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt has commissioned a feasibility study to look into options for expanding Deutsche Bank Park to an 80,000 capacity stadium.
Bild said Eintracht Frankfurt has barely won a match in months, yet the stadium is always packed and is now set to become significantly larger, with the club considering either adding a third tier or constructing a completely new build arena.
Board spokesman Axel Hellmann is thinking big, revealing for the first time what the stadium of the future could look like.
Two options are under consideration, alongside clear plans regarding atmosphere, ticket prices, and concerts. A timeline is already in place, too.
Two architectural options are currently under consideration: maintaining the current structural shell while adding a massive third tier or completely demolishing and rebuilding the venue stand-by-stand on the existing site.
Hellmann noted that a definitive decision is expected within six months, while full realization of the project could take up to 12 years.
Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. is a German professional sports club based in Frankfurt, Hesse (Germany). It is best known for its football club, which was founded on March 8th, 1899. The club currently plays in the Bundesliga, the top tier of the German football league system.
The 58,000-capacity Waldstadion, currently known as Deutsche Bank Park for sponsorship purposes, is a retractable roof sports stadium in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. It is the home of Eintracht Frankfurt.
Situated in the Frankfurt City Forest, the venue has undergone numerous redevelopments over the past century and hosted matches for major international tournaments including the 1974 and 2006 World Cups, Euro 1988, and Euro 2024.
A recent expansion completed ahead of the 2023/24 season added 11,000 safe standing places to the north-west stand, lifting total matchday capacity to 60,100.
The club has now commissioned a feasibility study to scale capacity up to 80,000.
If realized, this expansion would make the arena the second-largest football stadium in Germany behind Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.
Frankfurt’s mooted stadium expansion is not just for football purposes, either.
It is anticipated it would become a multi-purpose venue, where it could host major concerts and other large-scale events.
