Exalted redevelopment plans for MCG

Melbourne Cricket Ground redevelopment

Fox Sports Australia

New images of the planned $1 billion Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) (Australia) redevelopment have been revealed, with rooftop lighting and barbecue decks high in the sky among the new elements.

The ‘Fox Sports’ stated that the Dan Andrews Victorian State Government has put $2 million into the planning process, which saw renders created for the project.

The 1,00,024-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground, also known locally as ‘The G’, is an Australian sports stadium located in Yarra Park, Melbourne, Victoria (Australia).

The ‘Fox Sports’ further stated that the Shane Warne Stand will be rebuilt with the ground’s capacity potentially raised to 105,000.

Lights for the stadium may be built into the rooftops, as seen at Perth’s 60,000-capacity Optus Stadium, meaning that light towers would not be required. However, they would be kept given their heritage value.

Newly-built decks inside the stand, facing onto the playing surface and out into the parkland around the ground, would include barbecue facilities.

But the redevelopment may not get underway until late 2027, after both the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup, the latter of which could see its final played at the MCG.

A “very grateful” Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) Chief Executive Stuart Fox thanked the Andrews Government – “This funding will allow the MCC and the State Government to develop detailed plans around scope options, funding and timings for the possible future redevelopment of the MCG. We have a shared commitment to ensuring the MCG remains the People’s Ground, a world-class stadium and caters to everyone’s evolving needs into the future.”

There is the potential to build a five-star hotel into the MCG precinct to generate revenue.

Put in Victorian Sports Minister Martin Pakula, “The MCG is our most iconic stadium and we’re working with the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Melbourne Cricket Ground Trust to plan what’s needed for decades to come.”
