The Swiss professional football club – FC Sion – have revealed ambitious plans to build a stadium with a rollercoaster winding around the outside of the stadium and an 80-room hotel attached. The new facility has been named ‘Cervin Coliseum’.
Design Cost
‘express.co.uk’ stated that the drop-in-a-swoon design of the stadium is estimated to cost a whopping £420million.
The FC Sion, also known simply as Sion or formally as the Football Club Sion, is a Swiss football club from the city of Sion (Switzerland). They play in the Swiss Super League, the highest tier of Swiss football.
The Stade de Tourbillon is a multipurpose stadium in Sion, Switzerland. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of the FC Sion. The stadium holds 16,000 people and was built in 1968 and renovated in 1989.
‘Sion 2030’
‘express.co.uk’ further stated that the FC Sion bosses hope the new arena will be completed within the next four years. The project is being dubbed ‘Sion 2030’ by the developers and is the brainchild of the FC Sion President and Owner Christian Constantin. The 69-year-old is an architect by trade and the mega-rich custodian wants the stadium to act as a benchmark for new builds in Swiss football.
‘Cervin Coliseum’
Constantin has named the new venue ‘Cervin Coliseum’ and the FC Sion facility will be built completely from scratch. The top-flight and Constantin has decided not to renovate the historic Stade de Tourbillon. The new stadium will hold between 15,000 and 21,000 supporters on a matchday.
Loop-the-Loop
A statement sent out by the club read, “While building the new venue we will require the services of the State of Valais (a canton [Member State] in Southwestern Switzerland) and the Municipality of Sion as far as the technical constraints and the problems related to the construction is concerned. The real marvel of the stadium project is the non-footballing amenities which include a rollercoaster and a hotel. As detailed in the computer-generated stadium designs a massive loop-the-loop will wind around one side of the stadium thus providing a majestic look. The venue project will have to be finalized before the public consultation scheduled for mid-2027.”
365-days-a-year Venue
Constantin’s objective is to keep the venue active the whole year round even when the soccer matches are not being played. It will be a multipurpose building with another striking feature – the natural grass pitch with a hard surface.
Money Spinner
A multipurpose venue will allow the FC Sion to host concerts at the stadium and the capacity will be 33,000 spectators for music acts and other entertainment events. And with an 80-room hotel integrated into the stadium it would act as a money spinner for the top-flight.
