FC Sion gets green light for new stadium Image: FC Sion and Christian Constantin SA

A new football stadium will be built in Sion VS (Switzerland).

‘bluewin.ch’ stated that the City of Sion, the Canton of Valais and the Swiss football club FC Sion have arrived at a unanimous decision on not to renovate the home of the FC Sion – the Stade de Tourbillon in Sion, Switzerland.

The Sion VS is a City in Southwestern Switzerland and the capital of the Canton of Valais (VS).

The FC Sion or Sion is a Swiss football club from the City of Sion (Switzerland). The club was founded in 1909 and plays in the Swiss Super League, the highest level of the Swiss football league system. The top-flight play their home matches at the Stade de Tourbillon.

The Stade de Tourbillon is a multipurpose stadium in Sion, Switzerland. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of the FC Sion. The stadium holds 16,000 spectators and was built in 1968 and renovated in 1989.

‘bluewin.ch’ further stated that the above development suggests that nothing can stop Christian Constantin (Owner and Chairman of FC Sion) from building a new home for the top-notch club the price tag of which is pegged at CHF 450 million.

In January 2024, the City of Sion, the Cantonal Department of Security, the Institutions and Sport, the Valais Football Association, and the FC Sion signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to ensure that professional football and youth football gets the much-needed impetus in Valais.

The Valais Football Association (AVF) is the regional football association for the Canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is a nonprofit organization that supports and administers the football clubs within the Valais Region. The AVF is responsible for organizing various football competitions and events.

After working on the same for 18 months the above five entities have arrived at the decision that the Stade de Tourbillon will not be renovated anymore.

The Stade de Tourbillon will remain in operation until a new stadium is constructed.

Constantin informed that the new home of FC Sion will be privately funded by individuals and will not be built with the help of the taxpayers’ money.

The above entities have also decided to build a football academy in Sion to mould the cream of the crop Gen Z Men and Women soccer players.
