Plans have been revealed for an 8,000-capacity football stadium to be built in the Oulunkylä Sports Park in the Finnish capital Helsinki.
The City of Helsinki said the stadium will provide a high-quality setting for national and international football matches and other larger events.
The Oulunkylä Sports Park in Helsinki, Finland, already enjoys a basketball court, football and athletics fields and in winter a large artificial ice rink is set up.
The sports park also has an ice stadium, a gym and indoor sports facilities for guided sports such as dance and gymnastics.
New apartments for 500 residents would also be built next to the sports park and near the light rail line.
The city is currently negotiating with football club IF Gnistan, which operates in the area, about the construction of a football stadium.
The northern part of the park will be preserved as a forest and there will be a separate area for school sports
The planning of the sports park started a year ago in the spring of 2025.
In feedback received from city residents, they highlighted concerns about the effects of the stadium’s events and the glare of the lights.
They also questioned whether there is enough space in the area for school sports and for the residents, especially children and young people, to move around independently.
There were also concerns about the loss of trees and nearby nature.
The current stadium lights are to be replaced with new lights that will become part of the stadium building. The draft plan also specifically stipulates the limitation of disruptive light.
In addition to the stadium, the plan will develop the park’s sports fields so that competitive and recreational activities of local football clubs, school sports and residents’ fitness and other sports in the area would still be possible.
The current sports services will remain unchanged, with the exception of athletics. A 100-meter running track is planned to be built next to the ball field on the eastern edge of the sports park, especially to serve school sports.
A new sports area will be designated to the north of the stadium, where it is possible to do high and long jump and shot-put, for example.
The new ice rink is planned to be built in about five years, approximately in its current location in the middle of the area.
The northern part of the sports park will be changed into a local recreation area in the new plan, which means that it will remain a forested zone and nothing will be built there.
Since the sports park is located right next to the light rail line, it is also a good location for housing.
Housing for approximately 500 new residents has been outlined along Hirsipadontie and Käskynhaltijantie. The buildings would be 5–7 stories high.
The trees around the ice rink and next to the roundabout will be preserved so that the entrance to the sports park will remain green and park-like.
