With Special Olympics lined up in 2023, Germany is planning to build its most inclusive stadium in Berlin, according to media reports. Authorities have allocated an astounding €160 million for the new athletics stadium, which will replace the historic Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark.
The home stadium of FC Dynamo will be demolished entirely in 2020 to give way for the new stadium according to Berlin secretary of state for sport Aleksander Dzembritzki.
While there will be a marginal increase in the new 20,000-seater from the current 19,800, the biggest difference will be its focus on inclusivity. The new arena is being designed to showcase how a stadium could be made welcoming particularly for disabled sportsmen, athletes and viewers.
This also explains the steep budget for the stadium which will also include secondary facilities such as a new indoor hall, tennis courts, clubhouse and fitness club.
Groundbreaking is likely to take place in 2021 in order to meet the deadline for 2023 Special Olympics, which will be held in Berlin.
