Granada CF is embarking on a phased modernization and expansion of its Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes.
PTV News said the Spanish football club is aiming to enclose the four corners of the stadium and increase capacity to over 30,000, with long-term plans to build a fourth tier on the Preferencia stand.
The project includes comprehensive upgrades to spectator facilities, access, and surrounding infrastructure to turn the venue into a more modern, consistent, and competitive sports complex.
Granada CF – known simply as Granada – is a Spanish football club based in the City of Granada (Spain), in the autonomous community of Andalusia, that plays in the Segunda División, after being relegated from LaLiga in the 2021-2022 seasons.
The Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes is a multiuse stadium in Granada, Spain. Currently, it is used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 19,336 people and was built in 1995 to serve as the home ground of Granada CF, the main football club of the city.
Granada CF said work will start with improvement and upgrading of access points to the Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium, along with an expansion of its capacity.
In the first phase, work will focus on the stadium entrances, with a complete redesign of the various gates.
The project will begin at the gate known as the “Puerta de la Afición” (Fan Gate), where, in addition to updating its supports, one of the project’s main new features will be incorporated: the restoration of the iconic arch that welcomed fans to the old Los Cármenes Stadium.
This element, composed of three curves—two smaller lateral ones and a central one—is a nod to the club’s history.
Subsequently, the expansion of the stands will be undertaken, a project that will be carried out in several progressive phases.
The pace of these phases, which will be staggered, will depend on the concession agreement, with the first phase lasting four years.
The first phase of the project will take place in the Preferencia stand, where a fourth tier will be added, constructed from the exterior of the existing structure.
This expansion will be the starting point for a gradual growth that will extend to the other tiers of seating, eventually reaching the Tribuna stand.
Each phase will be structurally independent, allowing work to progress in different areas of the stadium without needing to complete the connections between stands beforehand.
Once the works are finished, the capacity of the Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium is estimated to be close to 30,000 spectators, including the hospitality areas.
The project will be made possible thanks to joint funding from Granada City Council, the Granada Provincial Council—which has already approved the corresponding allocation—and the Club’s contribution through CVC funds included in the LaLiga Impulso plan.
With this renovation, the Club aims to secure sponsorship opportunities that will generate a return on investment.
