A decision has been taken to renovate the Holstein Stadium in Kiel, Germany and ‘The Storks’ will soon boast a chic home ground.
‘holstein-kiel.de’ stated that the 2. Bundesliga team KSV Holstein has welcomed the decision of the City of Kiel to totally refurbish their home venue – the Holstein Stadium. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin following the conclusion of the 2025-2026 2. Bundesliga seasons.
The coming months will be dedicated to detailed planning before construction is scheduled to begin towards the end of the second quarter of 2026 depending on the approval process.
The 2. Bundesliga team KSV Holstein is a German association football and sports club based in the City of Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. From the 1900s through the 1960s the club was one of the most dominant sides in Northern Germany.
The Holstein-Stadion is a stadium in the port City of Kiel in Northern Germany. It is the home of the 2. Bundesliga team Holstein Kiel.
‘holstein-kiel.de’ further stated that the winning design was from the renowned firm HPP Architects and will be implemented by Zech Sports GmbH. The process can now move forward.
KSV President Steffen Schneekloth expressed his delight at the City’s decision, “The redecoration of the Holstein Stadium is a welcome decision. It will create an avant-garde venue for our fans and better conditions for our team both on and off the pitch. The winning design is perfect. The new stadium will allow us to combine tradition and modernity and to be on par with other clubs in terms of sports infrastructure. The construction phase while matches are being played will certainly be challenging but we will handle it.”
Phased Process
Revamp of the Holstein Stadium will be a phased process both during and outside of the season which will result in disruptions for the fans and the athletes. The planned new stadium will be able to hold 22,087 spectators with approximately 44 percent standing room and 56 percent seating.
The architecture essence is the maritime theme – the distinctive roof structure is based on shipbuilding and brings to the fore the City’s identity. At the same time, the supporting structure allows for the future integration of a large-scale photovoltaic system – a key element in meeting the sustainability target and energy efficiency. A new business area with additional VIP boxes will also come up.
There will be ease of access: The grounds will be raised by three percent from the Projensdorfer Straße and Westring towards the pitch to create barrier-free access. A total of 64 wheelchair spaces and 60 spaces for visually impaired fans will contribute to the inclusive design.
New Opportunities
Emphasized Wolfgang Schwenke, Commercial Director, KSV Holstein, “The new stadium opens up additional opportunities for us in marketing and partner activation. This allows us to offer our sponsors a comparable package to compare with what they get from the other stadiums. A modern environment, new presentation areas and expanded hospitality offerings also strengthen collaboration and increase the appeal of our location. This is an important step for the further development of the club and the region.”
The redeveloped Holstein Stadium will open up floodgates of opportunities not only for KSV Holstein but for the operators holding additional events in the venue.
Stated Schneekloth, “The City and the surrounding region will also benefit from the new stadium due to the regional economic effects. For example, Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga matches generate jobs, the restaurant and hotel industries in the region get a boost in terms of increased sales and income and the region gets more visibility. Events taking place in areas skirting the stadium on a non-matchday will also get a shot in the arm in terms of business.”
The financing framework of 75 million euros net will be supported by the State, the City, the Club, and private initiatives.
