Sydney (Australia) must continue thinking big when it comes to the world-class infrastructure and major events.
A LinkedIn Post By Paul Nicolau, Executive Director, Business Sydney, stated, “A proposed retractable roof over the Accor Stadium is a bold step that would unlock significant economic benefits for our City and strengthen our position as Australia’s global events capital.”
“A feasibility study has now found that the benefits of a roof would outweigh the costs opening the door for Sydney to host more international sport, concerts and global entertainment events without the risk of weather disruption.”
“For the promoters certainty matters. A roofed stadium would allow longer event runs, bigger productions and greater confidence to bring major events to Sydney. That means more visitors, more hotel nights, more spending in the restaurants, bars and the local businesses across the City.”
“It would also make Sydney far more competitive globally when bidding for major events from international sporting tournaments to blockbuster concerts ensuring we don’t lose opportunities to the other Cities with modern enclosed stadiums.”
The LinkedIn Post By Paul Nicolau, Executive Director, Business Sydney, further stated, “At ‘Business Sydney’ we believe infrastructure like this is an investment in the future of our visitor economy, the tourism sector and global reputation. A retractable roof would future-proof the Accor Stadium and help attract the next generation of major events that drive jobs, tourism and economic activity.”
‘The Daily Telegraph’ stated that the Government bean-counters have given a Las Vegas-style roof for the Accor Stadium the tick of approval with a feasibility study finding the benefits outweigh the $300m-plus cost.
The Accor Stadium is the focus of a renewed commercial push as the business leaders press for a roof. A secret business case backing a Vegas-style stadium roof has emerged as the financial rationale for that campaign. The drive is framed as both a commercial opportunity and a public infrastructure debate.
The 83,000-capacity Stadium Australia, currently known as the Accor Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a multipurpose stadium located in the suburb of the Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The stadium, which is sometimes referred to as the Sydney Olympic Stadium, the Homebush Stadium or simply the Olympic Stadium, was completed in March 1999 at a cost of A$690 million to host the 2000 Summer Olympics.
