The AIL Arena stadium which will be the new home of Swiss Super League club FC Lugano has been handed over to the City of Lugano.
The City of Lugano said the venue was handed over by the general contractor HRS Real Estate to the City and that it has now handed over the keys to FC Lugano.
The new venue will give Lugano a modern and technologically advanced stadium, designed to meet the standards required for national and international competitions.
Located in the Cornaredo area, the AIL Arena is poised to become a sporting hub for the entire region.
FC Lugano is a Swiss football club based in Lugano, Switzerland. The club plays in the Swiss Super League, the top tier of the Swiss football league system. The Cornaredo Stadium currently serves as their home ground.
The new stadium is being built as part of the PSE Lugano project, which consists of four sub-projects: The Arena Sportiva (AIL Stadium for 10,000 spectators), the Palazzetto dello Sport (hall for 3,000 spectators for sports events, 4,000 for events), an investor project P2 for administrative facilities and commercial space, and an investor project P3 for residential space.
The construction of the venue was planned in three phases and will replace the Cornaredo Stadium which has served as the top-flight club’s digs since 1951.
Mayor Michele Foletti, Deputy Mayor Roberto Badaracco, and City Councilors Raoul Ghisletta and Marco Chiesa were present at the symbolic handover ceremony; HRS Real Estate SA represented Martin Kull, CEO and owner, and Rebecca Kull, COO and owner.
By FC Lugano’s initiative, and with the aim of engaging residents, athletes from Italian-speaking Switzerland, and anyone wishing to discover the new facility up close, the AIL Arena will open its doors to the public on the weekend of May 30th and 31st.
Visitors will be offered the opportunity to enjoy an immersive experience at the new home of the Juventus club.
This celebration is also designed to thank the public for their support of the PSE project. The event, promoted and funded by FC Lugano SA, will allow families, fans, and the curious to feel part of this important milestone for the city.
During the month of July, the old Cornaredo stadium will be dismantled and work will begin on the urban park and adjacent residential buildings.
To pay tribute to the facility’s 75 years of service, the City of Lugano will host a picnic on the football pitch on Saturday, June 6th.
For the final evening of the old Cornaredo stadium, the pitch will belong entirely to the locals. The event program and booking procedures will be announced in the coming weeks.
The inauguration ceremony of the new AIL Arena will be held during the first home match of the 2026-2027 Brack Super League season, likely scheduled for the weekend of July 25-26, 2026.
The Sports and Events Center project is part of a broader urban development vision aimed at creating welcoming and functional public spaces, designed to encourage meeting, sharing, and organizing events, including those of international importance.
The project also includes the creation of new green spaces and a 12,000 m² park, significantly contributing to strengthening the neighborhood’s attractiveness and improving its quality of life.
