The Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan (US) is officially entering the new era of college sports.

Stadium Advertisements

‘Detroit Free Press’ stated that the Michigan Wolverines have agreed to a deal with a trio of sponsors − Coca-Cola, Meijer (a large American regional supercenter chain based in Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Google Gemini − all of whom will have advertisements inside the Michigan Stadium on the walls surrounding the field and signage on both sides of their videoboards on the North and South sides of the field, the program announced on August 19th. It can be stadium-based branding.

The Michigan Stadium, nicknamed ‘the Big House’, is the American football stadium for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is the largest stadium in the United States and the Western Hemisphere, the third-largest stadium in the world, and the 34th-largest sports venue in the world. Its official capacity is 107,601, but it has hosted crowds in excess of 115,000.

The Michigan Wolverines comprise 27 varsity sports teams at the University of Michigan including 13 Men’s teams and 14 Women’s teams. These teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA’s) Division I (the highest level of college sports in the United States) and in the Big Ten Conference (a collegiate athletic Conference in the United States).

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States and one in Canada. It also organizes the athletic programs of the colleges and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in the college sports. The headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana (US).

Advertisement Renderings

‘Detroit Free Press’ further stated that the school shared renderings of what the advertisements will look like as ‘the Big House’ enters its 99th season and is currently the largest stadium in the United States with a capacity of 107,601.

‘Tradition of Excellence’

Warde Manuel, Athletic Director, University of Michigan, said in a statement, “The Leaders and Best Champion Partners Program reflects the next step in Michigan Athletics’ proud tradition of excellence. This is not a departure from who we are, but an evolution that strengthens our ability to remain a national leader, compete for the championships and support our student-athletes in the modern era of college athletics.”

Stadium-based Branding

Earlier this year, Manuel said the Department was in search of additional ways to raise revenue in an era where the expenses are skyrocketing with Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) costs. The release, which states that all the advertisements will either be in maize, blue or white, said the advertisements can include “on-field and stadium-based branding, scoreboard integrations and end zone placements, digital and in-game sponsorship activations”.

Jersey Patches

The idea of jersey patches is still in “exploration” but could be quite lucrative. Notre Dame’s recent agreement with SoFi technologies is expected to bring in $18-20 million annually.

The Notre Dame Athletics refers to the Fighting Irish, the intercollegiate sports program representing the University of Notre Dame in Indiana (US).

The SoFi Technologies, Inc. is an American financial technology company. It was founded in 2011 to refinance student loans for the Stanford University graduates. SoFi operates as a direct bank serving the retail customers and the businesses and is the largest US-based online lender. It has nearly 16 million customers as of 2026.

Ads Few and Far Between

Advertisements had been few and far between for Michigan with only Gatorade (sports drink) logos on the sideline equipment, an Allstate emblem on the nets behind the field goal posts and a Michigan Medicine emblem on the blue injury tent.

Athletic Scholarship Fund

The Allstate nets (the retractable field-goal safety netting systems featuring the Allstate [American insurance company] logo installed behind the uprights at the Michigan Stadium) went up prior to the 2025 season after an agreement with the University of Michigan. The company has donated $1,500 for every extra point and $500 for every field goal to Michigan’s athletic scholarship fund.

Revenue-sharing NIL Landscape

Added Manuel, “The Michigan Stadium is one of the most iconic and cherished venues in all of sports and we have been deeply intentional about preserving its tradition, character and identity. As we introduce this partner program we will do so with care and purpose thus ensuring that any brand partner presence is strategic, tasteful and aligned with the values of the University of Michigan. We are grateful for the meaningful investment these partners are making in Michigan Athletics and, most importantly, in our student-athletes. Their support will help position Michigan to thrive in the evolving revenue-sharing and NIL (a person’s legal right to control and profit from their own personal identity and public brand) landscape while continuing to pursue championship success at the highest level.”

Athletics Revenue

Michigan projects upwards of $297 million in athletics revenue and expenses in the 2026-2027 seasons. The NIL budget, just for the football program, is in the ballpark of $35-40 million and coach Kyle Whittingham said that this summer at this pace the going rate of a competitive, championship-level football program in 2027 could reach nearly $50 million.
