Newcastle United are looking at different sites for a potential new stadium as the Premier League club mulls a move away from St James’ Park.

Newcastle United’s owners, led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, are reportedly looking at ‘alternative’ sites to nearby Leazes Park for a potential brand-new stadium.

NUFC Blog said there had been a view that a new state-of-the-art stadium would be built on Leazes Park next to the existing stadium, but there are many hurdles to jump to get clearance to do that.

The Leazes Park site now faces a new challenge with the revelation that there is a substantial bat population in the park that would make construction a problem.

It can be a criminal offence to deliberately capture, injure, disturb or kill a bat, while it is a criminal offence to damage or destroy the breeding or resting site of a bat.

Alongside searching for sites elsewhere, the club are supposedly taking action to explore potential relocation strategies in line with legal protections for bats, which would allow them to continue making progress on a new home at Leazes Park, which remains their preferred site.

The Magpies have been weighing up the future of their home since 2024, with the two initial options being to redevelop the iconic St James’ Park or to construct a new stadium at the nearby Leazes Park site.

St James’ Park is a football stadium in Newcastle upon Tyne, England (UK). It is the home of the Premier League team Newcastle United F.C.

With a seating capacity of 52,350 seats, it is the eighth-largest football stadium in England. St James’ Park has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Newcastle United have supposedly identified alternative sites at Hunters Moor (north of Leazes Park) or the nearby Nuns Moor Park for their new ground.

There are also reports that North East mayor Kim McGuinness is keen for investment to be made in the Arthur’s Hill area, which is located just a mile away from Newcastle’s St James’ Park, providing another potential option for the club.

A PIF delegation is set to visit Newcastle later this month and as part of that visit, the delegation will meet with CEO David Hopkinson and his board at Matfen Hall, where it’s expected the stadium will be top of the agenda.

Meanwhile, this summer will see the club make some big improvements to St James’ Park.

Newcastle United is initiating significant modernization works at St James’ Park to improve fan comfort and infrastructure, following approval from ownership.

Key improvements focus on enhancing the stadium experience while separate, long-term decisions on expanding the Gallowgate End or developing a new 70,000+ seater stadium are finalized.

Concourse upgrades include the installation of additional television screens to improve the fan experience.

Targeted upgrades focus on fan comfort within the stadium infrastructure, while in the surrounding area, a new public footpath is planned, connecting Percy Street directly to Strawberry Lane and the stadium, improving matchday access.

Additionally, there’s still a decision to be made on the relocation of the club’s training facilities, which seems set to go ahead on the Woolsington site near Newcastle Airport.

Fans have been waiting since 2024 to find out whether the club will opt to redevelop St James’ Park or relocate and construct a new stadium, and they will likely have to wait even longer following the recent developments.
