The National Stadium, located in the heart of Lima on José Díaz Avenue, best showcases urban and sporting life in Peru. Preceding it was the 1927 National Stadium which featured a preferential wooden grandstand and was used primarily by the Lima clubs and for national celebrations. The requirement for a futuristic facility led to the demolition of the venue and the present venue was inaugurated on October 27th, 1952.
Since its opening the National Stadium has hosted the Peruvian national team matches in the South American qualifiers and tournaments as well as showcase fixtures of the Copa Libertadores (the highest level of competition in South American club football) and the Copa América (the premier Men’s national team football tournament in South America). It was at this venue that the national team qualified for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The stadium has also been the venue for the Copa Sudamericana and has also hosted the South American Youth Championships and the U-17 and U-20 Championships.
The CONMEBOL Sudamericana, also known as the Copa Sudamericana, is an annual international club football competition organized by the CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America, since 2002. It is the second-most prestigious club competition in South American football.
The South American Youth Football Championship, also known as the South American U-20 Championship, branded as CONMEBOL Sub 20, is a South American football tournament organized by the CONMEBOL for the South American national teams of Men under age of 20.

Beyond football the National Stadium’s field and stands have hosted massive concerts, religious events, political rallies, and citizen demonstrations turning it into a public square in the capital. In 1964, it witnessed Peru’s worst sporting tragedy when a violent clash between the fans and the police left dozens dead and hundreds injured, an event that shaped the sports safety protocols for decades.
In 2010, the stadium underwent a renovation that included the remodeling of its stands, the installation of a modern roof, a new façade, and technological upgrades. However, a transformation of huge magnitude is being proposed which includes structural modifications, increased seating capacity and new international standards which had never before been considered.
