Premier League (UK) fixtures will resume this weekend after a pause to the season as a mark of respect following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

‘Premier League’ stated that seven of the 10 Premier League fixtures this weekend will be played, with three matches postponed due to events surrounding The Queen’s funeral.

The Premier League is the top level of the men’s English football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League (EFL). Seasons typically run from August to May with each team playing 38 matches.

Queen Elizabeth II died “peacefully” at her home in Balmoral, Scotland, on September 8th, 2022. She was 96.

September 19th is the day of the Queen’s State funeral.

‘Premier League’ further stated that in addition, kickoff times will change for two Premier League matches.

Matches postponed on September 18th are Chelsea F.C.’s matches against Liverpool F.C. at the former’s residence – the 41,837-capacity Stamford Bridge in London, and Manchester United F.C.’s home match vs. Leeds United.

Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.’s fixture against Crystal Palace F.C., that was due to be played on September 17th, will also remain postponed.

This weekend’s match schedule is:

September 16th

September 17th

September 18th

(All times BST)

Following extensive consultation with clubs, police, local Safety Advisory Groups, and other relevant authorities, there was no other option but to postpone the three fixtures.

The Premier League thanked the UK Football Policing Unit and other police forces across United Kingdom, as well as its broadcast partners, for their support during this process, and will continue to liaise with them ahead of the weekend.

For the matches being played during the period of National Mourning, tributes will be paid to The Queen at Premier League stadiums.

New dates for the postponed matches will be announced in due course.
