Mazatlán – a quaint and scenic location on Mexico’s west coast – has only about half a million population. The city does not even boast a professional football team. But, that has not proved to be a dampener for the Sinaloa regional authorities from going forward with an ambitious scheme to deliver a football stadium.
But, the stadium is being built to apparently bring a team to town. Construction of the venue began way back in 2017 and was initially scheduled to take barely 427 days. The deadline then went on extending exponentially by 20 months, and now the stadium is scheduled to be delivered in May 2020. For that reason one should not take for granted the suggested price tag of MXN 460 million.
The Sinaloa regional authorities have decided, however, to woo one of the existing teams or an investor to set up a club exactly because of a ready-to-use stadium. At the outset, it was planned to host liga Ascenso games – the second tier of professional football in Mexico of the Mexican football league system – but, the arena might also be the residence of a Liga MX club – the top tier of the Mexican football league system.
A rectangular piece of land spanning 10 hectares in the north of Mazatlán was set aside for the project, along one of crucial access routes between the center and highway bypass. The plot has only one entrance, on its southern end.
This was used by architects of the stadium, Dünn Arquitectura Ligera, to determine the arena’s final design. The auditorium has two tiers on all sides barring the south one. Also, the facade lowers in the south and is tilted just behind the goal to give fans a welcome feel, a gate of sort. Interestingly, the membrane facade reaches above the stands to create a partial sunroof over some fans. In total 16,000 m2 of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane was used to create a simple yet unique outer form.
The lower tier of seating is continuous and sunken below ground level, allowing supporters to walk inside and giving a general outline of the field and no stairways to bother them. The upper tier is erected with reinforced concrete. In total, the stadium should be in a position to fit in 25,000 people, of which 14,600+ will be seated in the lower tier and just over 9,000 in the upper sections. Some 1,150 people will be seated in 56 boxes. The contractor for the project is Meprosa Construcciones.
