Residents sulk over Club Brugge venue plans

Club Brugge stadium updates May 2021

Club Brugge

The Belgian professional football club – Club Brugge – idea of a new stadium within the Olympia site where their present residence – Jan Breydel Stadium is housed – has already met with stiff resistance from 125 residents.

Club Brugge’s planned venue has been in the works for quite some time now.

‘Archysport’ stated that the news that the club had met with objections was revealed by the Alderman for Spatial Development Franky Demon.

Club Bruges is based in Bruges in Belgium. It was founded in 1891 and its home ground is the Jan Breydel Stadium, which has a capacity of 29,062. Jan Breydel Stadium is a multiuse stadium in Sint-Andries, Bruges, Belgium. The City-owned stadium is the home stadium of two top-flight association football clubs, Club Brugge and Cercle Brugge. It is used mainly for football matches and was built in 1975.

The idea of a new 40,000-capacity stadium within the Olympia site (where current Jan Breydel Stadium stands) has been resurfacing for years.

‘Archysport’ further stated that the prime concern among the local residents is that along with the new facility will come the huge problem of too much traffic as well as light and noise pollution among several other issues. Based on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), the concerns will be addressed and prior to that Municipal officials will judge the validity of all objections. However, the final decision will be taken by the Flemish Government (Flemish region of Belgium) and a decision to the same is expected latest by early October.

Once Club Brugge’s new venue plans come to fruition, its present digs – Jan Breydel Stadium – would be torn down.

To ensure that the community on which the venue will sit is not disturbed by noise pollution and other factors, the club has made several concessions like the stadium bowl has been enclosed. Holding of concerts is a strict ‘no’ and the number of non-match events will also be limited.
