Sphere Entertainment plans to focus on pushing ahead with its Abu Dhabi project as well as its small-scale Sphere expansion plans.
AI Invest said Executive Chairman and CEO James Lawrence Dolan has emphasized the goal of designing and operating a venue that is busy 365 days a year with multiple events on most days.
While the future Sphere venues would still have all of the technology and content of the Las Vegas Sphere, the new ones would have seating capacities around 5,000 instead of the 17,000 Las Vegas has.
Dolan said during an earnings call for Sphere Entertainment’s second quarter financial results, “The design of these Spheres is quite similar to our large Sphere in Vegas, with a couple of improvements, but the business model is quite similar, which is to keep the venue busy 365 days a year.
“All the content that’s created for the Sphere in Vegas and, eventually, Abu Dhabi, will also play in any of these small Spheres. We’ve completed the design of it. We’ve also completed the business model, and the business model is designed along a franchise kind of approach.
“So, we are out in the marketplace now, beginning to expose potential investors to the business model and looking at different locations for small Spheres.
“These Spheres will be much less expensive than Las Vegas was. They’ll also be built faster. My hope would be that we could build a small Sphere in a little over two years.”
The Sphere Entertainment Company is an American entertainment holding company based in New York City (US) and controlled by the family of Charles Dolan. It owns the Sphere event venue in Paradise, Nevada, in the Las Vegas Valley and the New York-based regional sports network chain MSG Networks.
The Sphere (also known as the Sphere at the Venetian Resort) is a music and entertainment arena in Paradise, Nevada, United States, East of the Las Vegas Strip. Designed by Populous the project was announced by the Madison Square Garden Company in 2018, known then as the MSG Sphere.
The venue, which seats 17,600 people and has total capacity of 20,000, is being marketed for its immersive video and audio capabilities which include a 16K resolution wraparound interior light-emitting diode (LED) screen, speakers with beamforming and wave field synthesis technologies and 4D physical effects.
The venue’s exterior also features 580,000 sq ft (54,000 m2) of LED displays making it the largest in the world. The Sphere measures 366 feet (112 m) high and 516 feet (157 m) wide. The arena cost $2.3 billion making it the most expensive entertainment venue built in the Las Vegas Valley.
The company’s strategy involves enhancing operations in Las Vegas, driving long-term profitability, and advancing its plans to bring the Sphere brand to Abu Dhabi and additional markets worldwide.
Dolan highlighted that “The Sphere Experience” remains a key profit driver, with the next original content slate including “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere,” utilizing AI technologies and targeting an opening with over 200,000 tickets expected to be sold.
In addition to the Las Vegas venue, Sphere Entertainment is progressing with its Abu Dhabi expansion, which is expected to begin construction in 2026.
This project aims to replicate the Las Vegas model in a high-growth market, leveraging the UAE’s tourism boom. The Abu Dhabi venue could generate $150–200 million in annual revenue, assuming similar occupancy rates to Las Vegas.
The company is also focusing on small-scale sphere expansion, aiming to bring its immersive entertainment format to more markets. Dolan stated that “We have continued to add shows to our calendar and now expect to host more than 100 concerts this year, up from 70 in 2024”.
