The City Council has begun renovation work of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples, Italy, starting with the third tier.
‘calcioefinanza.it’ stated that the enhancement work is expected to cost around €250 million out of which €200 million will be bankroll by the Campania Region (administrative region in Southern Italy).
The Maradona Stadium total restyling work entails – following the opening of the third tier – elimination of the athletics track and the construction of a new tier. The main objective is to get the arena ready for EURO 2032 and to doll up the facility in such a manner so that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) selects it as one of the venues for the soccer extraordinaire.
First Step
Recently, the City of Naples announced the start of work on the third tier of the publicly-owned Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples, Italy. This is the first step toward the redevelopment project envisioned by the city administration which is expected to enjoy the support of the Campania Region but not of the Serie A team SSC Napoli – whose home is the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona – as confirmed repeatedly by the top-flight’s Owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.
UEFA Evaluation
To comply with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) benchmarks all the completed documents related to the Maradona Stadium revamp project must be submitted to the highest body of European football by the end of July. The UEFA will then evaluate the documents and will further hand over the list to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) from which the five designated venues will be picked for the soccer showcase to be hosted by Italy and Türkiye.
The 54,726-seat Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo, is a large multipurpose stadium in Naples, Italy. It serves as the home facility of the Serie A team SSC Napoli.
Goal EURO 2032
Averred Edoardo Cosenza, City Councilor for Infrastructure, “We are confident the facility will be one of the venues for EURO 2032.”
The 2032 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Football Championship, commonly referred to as the UEFA EURO 2032 or simply EURO 2032, will be the 19th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior Men’s national teams of its member associations. Italy and Türkiye will host the tournament which is expected to take place between June and July 2032.
Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the governing body of football in Europe consisting of 55 national associations.
‘calcioefinanza.it’ further stated that the Municipality is initiating steps to get all the requisite documents ready in order to submit the Fuorigrotta (site of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona) stadium’s candidacy as one of the five Italian venues for EURO 2032. It’s a race against time but the Manfredi Administration (Municipal Government of Naples) is firm on attaining its objective.
Full Steam Ahead
The announcement of the start of construction was made by the Councilor Cosenza – “We’re moving full steam ahead, according to the timeline we’ve been planning for months. Surveys are being carried out and everything is in place for the work underway on the third ring. The internal crane, on the Curve B side, is in place for the initial work on the third ring prototype. These works have been agreed upon with the organizers despite it being the month of concerts.”
Price Tag
The complete renovation of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona will cost around € 250 million, €200 million of which will be funded by the Campania Region, as informed by the President of the Campania Region Roberto Fico and €50 million by the Municipality.
Add Teeth
Asserted Councilor Cosenza, “We are confident we can qualify for EURO 2032. The redevelopment work will add teeth to the third tier. The structure is solid. The problem is the vibrations that affect the neighboring buildings. We’re installing additional iron beams to stabilize the third tier. We’ll add vibration dampers to these beams. There are 28 pylons to stabilize starting with Curva B which we’re using as a prototype. If everything works we’ll move on to the rest of the facility.”
Explained Councilor Cosenza, “If the prototype yields positive results the stabilization of the third tier will last 18 months. That doesn’t mean we won’t start doing the other planned things at the same time. That is, starting to dismantle the first tier, which will be demolished as planned. The Maradona Stadium will have a single large stand that will end near the pitch. As we gradually stabilize one section of the third tier we will move the spectators from the first tier.”
