The redevelopment plan for the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy has been approved, the city’s Mayor Gaetano Manfredi confirmed.

Chronicles of Campania said the approval for the revamp is a crucial bureaucratic and technical step to secure the city’s bid to host the 2032 European Championship football tournament.

The City and Region are working together to transform the Fuorigrotta stadium, home of SSC Napoli football club, into a state-of-the-art facility.

In the coming days, the Palazzo San Giacomo leadership will meet with UEFA delegates to discuss the project.

The goal of the technical meeting is the final presentation of Napoli’s dossier, with a focus on the modernization of the Fuorigrotta stadium.

The Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, also known as SSC Napoli, is an Italian professional football club based in the City of Naples that plays in Serie A, the top-flight of Italian football.

The 54,726-capacity Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, formerly known as the San Paolo Stadium, is a stadium in the Western Fuorigrotta suburb of Naples, Italy.

Manfredi said, “A concrete path for the modernisation of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is taking shape. Azzurri fans know what it is going to take to make the venue safer and more efficient and to bring it up to standard for the great sporting challenges and international events that await our city.

“In the next few days we will again meet with the UEFA delegates to present the candidature of Naples and the Maradona stadium to host Euro 2032 matches.

“Naples deserves a stadium worthy of its history, its fans and the future of its ever-more modern city.”

One of the most significant developments emerging from the mayor’s remarks concerns the political and economic front: the Campania Region will guarantee its support for the project.

This renewed institutional understanding will unlock funding channels that had previously been the main obstacle to the redesign.

According to Manfredi, collaboration between local authorities and the national government is key to implementing long-term initiatives that go beyond a single football competition.

The project will not only be aesthetic, but also structural, designed to restore a modern arena to the Azzurri fans and the citizens.

The “Maradona” operation is part of a broader urban revitalization plan aimed at consolidating the city’s role as a capital of sport and tourism in preparation for the 2032 challenge.
