The Super Bowl LVI Legacy Program – Champions Live Here – is teaming up with the LA84 Foundation, the Play Equity Fund and the National Football League (NFL) Foundation – to bring to sharp focus the achievements of the local community organizations – the unsung heroes – and provide grants to help these nonprofits continue fulfilling their missions in Los Angeles, US.
A statement on the Super Bowl LVI website read, “The Los Angeles Super Bowl Host Committee will recognize 56 ‘unsung heroes’ grassroots organizations and nonprofits that are making a transformative impact in underserved communities across the Los Angeles region.”
Los Angeles (US)-based the LA84 Foundation is a private, nonprofit institution created by the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee to manage Southern California’s endowment from the 1984 Olympic Games.
The Los Angeles-headquartered Play Equity Fund is a non-profit organization focused on bringing the transformational power of sport and structured play to all children, regardless of their race, gender, zip code or socio-economic status.
The New York (US)-based National Football League (NFL) Foundation, previously known as NFL Charities, is a non-profit making charitable organization, established by the member clubs of the National Football League (NFL) in 1973. It enables the clubs to collectively make grants to charitable and worthwhile causes at a national level.
The legacy program will honor each of the selected ‘Champion Organizations’ with a $10,000 grant award, a professionally produced marketing video spotlighting their organization and public recognition of their work in lead-up to the Super Bowl. Additionally, six of these 56 organizations will be selected to each receive a total grant award of $50,000 to make an even bigger impact on their community.
Changemakers
The Super Bowl LVI website further stated that the committee is seeking organizations that are focused on creating real change and reaching the many neighborhoods in need across the region. Qualified organizations must be inclusive, collaborative, resourceful, innovative and be focused on driving impact in the following areas:
- Youth development – Organizations creating greater access and opportunity for youth to participate in sports, leadership and educational programs, improving and upgrading fields, parks and play facilities and promoting the overall wellbeing of children and teens (physical, mental, emotional health);
- Jobs and economic opportunity – Organizations working to expand the landscape of jobs and economic opportunity, increasing and improving opportunities for training, internships, job placement, entrepreneurship, and independent contracts/vendor relationships within the sports sector; and
- Social justice – Organizations that are working to promote equity and positive change in areas such as education, juvenile justice, food insecurity, housing and homelessness, environmental justice and climate change, civil rights, health and wellness, and community safety.
Nomination criteria
The 56 champion organizations chosen and featured as part of the social impact initiative of the Super Bowl LVI Legacy Program will represent:
- Unsung heroes – Organizations with leaders and staff whose charitable work does not normally get recognized;
- Changemakers – Organizations that are on the frontlines and making changes, working for the well-being of Los Angeles;
- Inspirational – Organizations with leaders and staff who have inspiring stories and are invested in creating a positive future in their communities; and
- Diverse Values – Organizations that embody the diverse values of the National Football League (NFL), its teams, the cities each team represents and its players.
Eligibility criteria
- 501(c)(3) public charities or Government entities, not individuals, based in Los Angeles County;
- Groups of organizations such as coalitions or collaborative groups are eligible to apply, but only one organization may receive the grant;
- Organizations must have been in business for three years; and
- Organizations must be nominated.
