Responding to the urgent and pressing need to fight the latest wave of the pandemic which has clobbered Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced on February 16th the donation of HK$10 million to the Hong Kong Community Anti-Coronavirus Link.

Hong Kong is seeing an exponential rise in COVID-19 infections which has overwhelmed their healthcare system.

‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club’ stated that founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a world-class racing club that acts continuously for the betterment of the society. The club has a unique integrated business model, comprising racing and racecourse entertainment, a membership club, responsible sports wagering and lottery, and charities and community contribution. Through this model, the club generates economic and social value for the community and supports the Government in combating illegal gambling.

In 2020-2021, the club returned a total of HK$29.4 billion to the community. This included HK$24.9 billion to the Government in duty, profits tax and Lotteries Fund contributions and HK$4.5 billion in approved charity donations. The Club is Hong Kong’s largest single taxpayer and one of the City’s major employers. Its Charities Trust is also one of the world’s top 10 charity donors. The Club is always “riding high together for a better future” with the people of Hong Kong.

Asserted Philip Chen, Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, “At this critical moment in the pandemic we must all join hands together, mobilizing our resources to help those in need. This is why, in addition to the HK$1.5 billion it has already committed to fight the pandemic, the Club is donating another HK$10 million to the Hong Kong Community Anti-Coronavirus Link. I sincerely believe that through our joint efforts and our “can-do” spirit, Hong Kong definitely can and will overcome this present crisis.”

‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club’ further stated that showing their caring spirit, members of the club’s staff volunteer team, CARE@hkjc, have also volunteered to help out, and are on standby to lend assistance as requested by the Agency for Volunteer Service.

The Club’s purpose is the betterment of its society, and at this very challenging time for Hong Kong it is standing strong with the community, doing everything it can. Over the last two years, it has helped some one million people, especially those hard hit by the pandemic, including the elderly, the food insecure, first-time job seekers, and low-income families. Most recently, it has funded the distribution of “leave-home safe” compatible smart phones and data plans to approximately 20,000 elderly people.
