Wrexham AFC has been given the green light to add up to a further 2,250 seats in the new Kop Stand at the club’s Racecourse Ground.

The EFL Championship club’s planning application was approved by the County Borough Council Planning Committee.

Wrexham AFC said that together with the 5,500 seats already approved by the Planning Committee on March 3, 2025, this would allow the capacity of the new Kop Stand to go up to 7,750.

Combined with the current capacity of the Racecourse Ground this will take the overall capacity to just over 18,000.

The additional seats, part of a second tier in the new Kop Stand, will future proof the Racecourse Ground for many years to come so that it can hold international matches and remain true to its legacy as the oldest international ground still in use today.

The extra capacity is achieved as part of the approved design of the new stand and is within the approved footprint.

Wrexham Association Football Club is a professional football club based in Wrexham, Wales (UK). Formed in 1864, it is the oldest club in Wales and the third-oldest professional football team in the world. The club competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. The 12,600-capacity Racecourse Ground serves as their home.

Wrexham AFC said the increase in seating capacity in the new Kop Stand will allow the Club to cater for the strong demand for tickets for home matches from local fans, as well as the many international fans that visit both the Club and the City of Wrexham bringing with them much needed revenue for the local community.

A key part of the Club’s submission was an updated Travel Plan that included a commitment to the strong promotion across all Club channels for the continued use of public transport on match days.

These include the use of both bus and rail, with a close liaison with bus operators and Transport for Wales, and the continuation of the existing park and ride schemes plus the free parking option available exclusively on matchdays at Eagles Meadow.

Meanwhile Wrexham AFC also confirmed that they have completed the purchase from the Welsh Government of the land behind the Kop development.

The purchase of the corner plot of land means that the Club is now in full ownership of the enlarged stadium footprint and the additional land that will form the public realm area approaching the Kop from Mold Road, once it is complete.

Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, Adam Price MS, said: “The completion of this purchase marks another significant milestone for Wrexham AFC and for the wider regeneration of Wrexham.

“Projects like this show the positive impact that investment can have in creating vibrant places that attract visitors, support local businesses and boost confidence in the local economy.

“The Welsh Government has been proud to work with the Club and its partners to help unlock this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing the benefits this development will bring for Wrexham and North Wales for years to come.”

Wrexham AFC CEO Michael Williamson said: “The successful exchange and completion by the Club on the Crispin Lane plot of land from the Welsh Government is another milestone in the redevelopment of the new Kop Stand.

“The Club would like to thank the Welsh Government and all our Wrexham Gateway project partners for working together to deliver landmark change and progress to the City of Wrexham.”
