Wrexham's new stand gets council approval Image: Populous

The Canadian-American actor and film producer Ryan Reynolds and the American actor and screenwriter Rob McElhenney’s bid to redevelop the English Football League (EFL) League One team Wrexham A.F.C.’s home venue – the STōK Racecourse in Wrexham, Wales (UK) – has taken a step forward after plans for a new all-seater Kop Stand were greenlit by the local authorities.

‘BBC SPORT’ stated that the new designs for the ground’s iconic stand – drawn up by the same architects (the celebrated design firm Populous) behind the new 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England (UK) – were approved after a vote by the Wrexham County Borough Council’s Planning Committee.

The Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the Wrexham A.F.C., a tiny Welsh football club, for about £2 million ($2.6 million) back in 2021. It’s now worth around £100 million.

Preston (UK)-based the English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League it is the oldest football league in the world and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992 when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League, the top of the English football league system. The Football League was rebranded as the ‘English Football League’ (EFL) starting with the 2016-2017 seasons.

The Wrexham A.F.C. is a professional association football club based in Wrexham, Wales (UK). Formed in 1864 it is the oldest club in Wales and the third-oldest professional association football team in the world. They compete in the EFL League One, the third level of the English football league system.

The 13,341-capacity Racecourse Ground, known as the STōK Cae Ras (or STōK Racecourse) for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in Wrexham, Wales. It is the home of the Wrexham A.F.C.

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers as well as in the planning and design of major special events.

‘BBC SPORT’ further stated that in February the North Wales club released images of revised plans for the new 5,500-capacity section –which would give the club the option to increase their residence capacity at a later date subject to a separate planning application.

Maintained Michael Williamson, Wrexham’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), “It was a pleasure to speak in front of the Planning Committee and share the club’s excitement and ambition to deliver an atmospheric and authentic new Kop Stand for our fans. We look forward now to turning this vision into reality and writing a new chapter in the rich history of our proud club and stadium.”

The Wrexham say the stand’s proposed external brick façade design pays homage to the City’s ‘Terracottapolis’ nickname while the brick color and textures are reminiscent of the historic Ruabon red brick from the local area and will look on to a public plaza.

It represents the latest boost for the North Wales side as the club seeks a third successive promotion under the Hollywood Co-Owners Reynolds and McElhenney.
