A temporary stadium (Ibercaja Stadium) has been built in just six months and the same was inaugurated recently for the second-tier Spanish professional football club Real Zaragoza as the total refurbishment of their home ground – the La Romareda Stadium in Zaragoza, Spain – is on ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
The Nueva Romareda – the New Romareda as the La Romareda Stadium will be known post-redevelopment – is set to be completed in 2028 at an estimated cost of £117million. Demolition of the old La Romareda Stadium began after the 2024-2025 seasons.
The ‘Los Maños’ will now play at the temporary build – the 20,000-capacity Ibercaja Stadium in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. It is the first modular and demountable stadium to be delivered in Spanish football. But the fans attending Zaragoza’s friendly against their peer team CD Mirandés on July 30th said they are not happy as far as the safety quotient of the Ibercaja Stadium is concerned but they are fine with the comfort factor.
‘THE Sun’ stated that the Spanish outfit Real Zaragoza have moved out of their La Romareda home as it has been picked as a host stadium for the 2030 World Cup.
The Real Zaragoza, S.A.D., commonly referred to as Zaragoza, is a football club based in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, that currently competes in the Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish football league system. The La Romareda Stadium serves as their home pitch which after refurbishment will be known as the Nueva Romareda Stadium and will be able to pack in 43,148 spectators. Presently, they will be playing at their temporary digs – the Ibercaja Stadium.
The La Romareda is the home stadium of the Real Zaragoza in Zaragoza, Spain. It was inaugurated on September 8th, 1957. The official capacity of the arena is 33,608 with an average attendance of around 20,000 for the Real Zaragoza matches.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 24th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the Men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain. To mark the centenary of the first FIFA World Cup™ in 1930 a special match and centenary celebration will be held at the 60,235-capacity Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay – the host stadium of the 1930 Final – as well as one match each will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Asunción, Paraguay.
‘THE Sun’ further stated that the historic ground (La Romareda) is being expanded from a capacity of 33,608 to approximately 43,000 ahead of the tournament.
This is due to FIFA requiring all stadiums to have a minimum capacity of at least 40,000.
The competition will be played across Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
But in the meantime, Zaragoza has to play their football away from their home of the last 68 years.
The Ibercaja Stadium is notably smaller than the Romareda with a capacity of just 20,000.
The Board of the Nueva Romareda SL (the company responsible for constructing the Real Zaragoza’s totally transformed venue – the Nueva Romareda – as well as the temporary build – the Ibercaja Stadium) have agreed to the rental deal for the club to use the ground with the lease lasting 26 months.
The club will have the option to extend the deal until the Nueva Romareda reopens.
Zaragoza will pay £216,960 to rent the stadium but that will reportedly be increased by 70 percent if they are promoted to LaLiga (the highest level of the Spanish football league system).
The club will also have to pay for any upgrades that are required by the league regulations.
