The Athletic Director at the University of Alabama (US) Greg Byrne has said that plans to have fans in full attendance at the Bryant-Denny Stadium for the 2021 football season remains on course. He made this statement on social media.
‘AL.com’ stated that his post came in response to questions after the University of Alabama System recently announced it planned to have a full in-person class schedule without capacity restrictions for the Fall 2021 semester.
The University of Alabama is a public research university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (US). Established in 1820 and opened to students in 1831, the University of Alabama is the oldest and largest of the public universities in Alabama as well as the flagship of the University of Alabama System.
The 1,01,821-capacity Bryant-Denny Stadium is an outdoor stadium in Southeastern United States, on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. It is the home field of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team of the Southeastern Conference (American college athletic conference).
“We are moving forward with plans to have a full stadium in the Fall and will monitor medical guidelines as we have all along,” Byrne wrote on Twitter.
‘AL.com’ added that echoed an email Alabama sent to season ticket holders in late January. The previous note was to help gauge interest among ticket holders “in anticipation of 100 percent capacity in Bryant-Denny Stadium”.
Seating was limited to 20 percent of the 100,077-seat stadium during the 2020 season to meet COVID-19 capacity restrictions. In coronavirus-devastated United States, an optimistic picture is being painted for a return to normalcy with three vaccines now approved in the country in the goal to reach herd immunity at some point this year.
The first of seven home games is scheduled for September 11th, 2021 with Mercer Bears (the athletic teams of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia) visiting Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The University of Alabama is a football powerhouse and the current defending national champions still wants full house despite the troubling coronavirus case rates in the US.
Byrne’s above statement paints a very positive picture when compared to rest of the sports industry. Though the US is taking steps to allow fans at big-ticket sporting events in places like New York and New Jersey, nevertheless, it aims to fill the venues at reduced capacity, around 10 to 20 percent, and not packed houses as asserted by the University of Alabama top sports official.
The United States per day coronavirus cases still continues to be high despite shots being administered to its population. The daily case rate remains higher than last Spring when much of American society was on lockdown.
