Beijing is seeking to return the World Athletics Championships to China by bidding to host the 2027 edition of the event.

‘World Today News’ stated that the capital was the only responder to a process led by the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA) seeking interest from Cities in pursuing a bid for the 2027 Championships.

The World Athletics Championships (until 2019 known as the World Championships in Athletics) are a biennial athletics competition organized by World Athletics (formerly IAAF, International Association of Athletics Federations). Alongside the Olympic Games, they represent the highest level championships of senior international outdoor athletics competition for track and field athletics globally, including marathon running and race walking. Separate World Championships are held by World Athletics for certain other outdoor events, including cross-country running and half-marathon, as well as indoor and age-group championships.

Monaco-based World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation and International Association of Athletics Federations, is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross-country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running.

Beijing (China)-based the Chinese Athletic Association (CAA) is the national governing body for the sport of athletics in the People’s Republic of China. It became a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations in 1978 and is also a member of the Asian Athletics Association.

‘World Today News’ further stated that since the year 1991, the top international track and field event is being held every two years. Beijing successfully hosted the 15th World Athletics Championships at the National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) from August 22nd-30th, 2015. More than 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries and regions competed in 47 events.

The National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, is an 80,000-capacity stadium in Beijing, China. The stadium was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It was used again in the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The Bird’s Nest sometimes has temporary large screens installed at the stands.

At present, Beijing is pulling out all stops to host the World Athletics Championships. It is expected that the event will return to Beijing after 12 years and the City will hog the limelight.
