German 3.Liga club TSV 1860 Munich is teaming up with the City of Munich to expand and upgrade the Grünwalder Stadium.
TZ said the club, led by President Gernot Mang, and the City of Munich have jointly commissioned a feasibility study and brought a top expert on board to assess the project.
The 15,000-capacity Grünwalder Stadium (also known as the Sechzger Stadium) is a football stadium in Munich, Germany. It was built in 1911 and serves as the residence of the TSV 1860 Munich which plays in the third division of the German football league system.
The goal of the redevelopment is to modernize the stadium to meet second-division or Bundesliga standards.
Key elements of the renovation include increasing the capacity to 25,000 seats, installing a roof over the stands, and conducting a noise impact assessment.
TSV 1860 Munich said in a statement, “TSV München von 1860 e.V. has taken a decisive step towards the future and commissioned a feasibility study for the renovation of the Grünwalder Stadium.
“The goal: a modern stadium with at least 25,000 seats. The commission includes a detailed analysis of the legal, technical, and financial requirements for the structural and functional development of the stadium on Grünwalder Straße.”
Key elements of the study are:
- Increasing the stadium capacity to at least 25,000 spectators with a roof for all stands and enclosed corners
- Meeting the requirements of the DFL competitions (ideally UEFA Category 4)
- Planning and integration of modern hospitality and advertising spaces
- Integration of fan shops, catering facilities, and flexible event spaces
The stadium commission established by the club had previously commissioned a detailed noise impact assessment for the planned renovation and its effects on the surrounding area and is optimistic about the outcome.
Although the final results of the study are still pending, initial interim findings indicate that even with a capacity exceeding 25,000 seats, a full roof covering all around, and the use of modern, sound-absorbing construction materials, noise emissions for residents and neighboring businesses are not expected to be worse than current levels.
The club has commissioned an internationally renowned architecture and urban planning firm to conduct the feasibility study.
The firm also possesses extensive experience and expertise in the renovation and expansion of sports facilities in urban areas.
Supplemented by external experts, the contractor covers all requirements and ensures a comprehensive and accurate assessment. These will be incorporated into the feasibility study.
The Lions are receiving strong support from the City Hall, specifically from Mayor Dieter Reiter and Sports Mayor Verena Dietl, as well as from the various departments involved.
Walter Lechner, head of the stadium commission, said, “The club and the city are both optimistic that, based on the feasibility study, the results of which are expected in early summer, the renovation of the Grünwalder Stadium can become a reality in terms of planning law.
“Over the past few months, we have been working intensively and constructively on this project together with TSV 1860 Munich, the relevant departments of the City of Munich, and other stakeholders.”
1860 President Gernot Mang also sees the club as being on the right track.
He said, “I am very pleased that the feasibility study for the expansion of the Grünwalder Stadium has now been commissioned and am confident about its outcome. My sincere thanks go to everyone involved in the stadium commission as well as the City of Munich for their constructive cooperation and valuable support.”
Dietl said commissioning the feasibility study is an important step. She added, “Over the past few months, we have worked intensively and constructively on this project together with TSV 1860 Munich, the relevant departments of the city administration, and other stakeholders.
“I am very pleased that this joint commitment is now reflected in concrete progress, and I thank all employees at 1860 and also in our city administration for their professional expertise.”
