The new Stade de Luxembourg at Gasperich in Luxembourg successfully hosted the first football pilot on July 14th, 2021 in real-world conditions. The test fixture was attended by 1,158 people.
The arena price tag stands at circa € 77 million and there was cost overrun of almost € 17 million in excess of budgeted amounts. The tab was picked up by the State authorities and the City of Luxembourg. Stade de Luxembourg will replace 90-year-old Stade Josy Barthel as the national stadium. It will be part of the new Cloche d’Or district that is being built around it.
The 8,125-capacity Stade Josy Barthel is the national stadium of Luxembourg, home to the Luxembourg national football team and also used for rugby union and athletics. It is located on route d’Arlon in the Luxembourg City quarter of Belair.
‘VDL’ stated that the above information was given by the municipal authorities. In fact, the success of the test event left a smile on the faces of stakeholders. The match was a success both on the technical front and the fixture was organized in the most streamlined manner.
The Stade de Luxembourg is the future national stadium of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, located in the Luxembourg City quarter of Gasperich. The stadium will serve as the residence of Luxembourg’s national football and rugby teams. The stadium is designed to hold 9,386 spectators with fully covered seating for sporting events, and can hold up to 15,000 spectators for concerts. It is a UEFA Category 4 venue.

‘VDL’ further stated that the success of the above pilot has paved the way for the stadium to host its first official match on September 1st, 2021, when Luxembourg will take on Azerbaijan as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifying match. The match will mark the stadium’s official opening.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) officials congratulated the City of Luxembourg on its brand-new venue and the successful holding of the test event despite very rough weather conditions.
COVID-19 threw its long shadow on the stadium’s original October 2019 target date for completion coupled with inclement weather. In fact, the inauguration of the arena has been postponed several times and will now finally get off the ground on September 1st, 2021. Work began on the venue in the year 2017.
The facility is akin to a jewellery box. Fifty-one steel beams act as a buttress for the rectangular roof and the seats have been so arranged that they look like the design of the Luxembourg flag. The playing field has a hybrid surface.
The facility boasts three floors and features two business clubs at the back of the main stand. The parking space of the venue can hold 200 vehicles.
