The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (US) played host to what is believed to be a humongous soccer crowd for an international match since the COVID-19 breakout in March 2020 which tore the world asunder and the United States took the most severe beating from the virulent virus which has wiped out more than half a million of its population.

With the vaccine rollout program in the United States virus cases have come down and crowds are returning to venues.

‘Fox 5 Atlanta’ stated that the largely-attended fixture at the above arena was played between Mexico and Honduras on the night of June 12th.

The 71,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium, also known as simply ‘The Benz’, is a multipurpose stadium located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Opened in August 2017 as a replacement for the Georgia Dome, it serves as the home stadium of the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) and Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer (MLS).

The above matchup attracted a crowd of 70,072 – the largest reported soccer crowd in the world since 2020. The match ended in a 0-0 draw.

‘Fox 5 Atlanta’ further stated that the match was part of the Mexican Men’s National Team’s world tour. It’s the 18th edition of the tour, which hosts exhibition matches for El Tri and act as a kind of prelude to prepare for important soccer showpieces like the FIFA World Cup™ and Concacaf Gold Cup.

The Mexico national football team represents Mexico in international football and is governed by the Mexican Football Federation. It competes as a member of Concacaf, which encompasses the countries of North and Central America, and the Caribbean.

The FIFA World Cup™, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the sport’s global governing body.

The Concacaf Gold Cup is the main association football competition of the men’s national football teams governed by Concacaf, determining the continental champion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The Gold Cup is held every two years.
