The City Council in Naples (Italy) has agreed to provide €50m in funding for the redevelopment of Napoli’s Stadio Diego Armando Maradona ahead of EURO 2032 which brings the total funds of the project up to the €200m mark.
Long List
‘Football Italia’ stated that the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and the city of Naples are among the long list of stadia and cities competing to host matches at the EURO 2032 tournament which will be co-hosted by Italy and Türkiye.
The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo, is a large multipurpose stadium in Naples, Italy. Originally built with a combination of standing and seating sections the stadium is currently an all-seater with a capacity of 54,726.
The 2032 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Football Championship, commonly referred to as the UEFA EURO 2032 or simply EURO 2032, will be the 19th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior Men’s national teams of its member associations. Italy and Türkiye will host the tournament which is expected to take place between June and July 2032.
Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the governing body of football in Europe and one of FIFA’s six continental confederations for association football consisting of 55 national associations.
Venue Restoration
‘Football Italia’ further stated that like many stadiums in Italy the 54,732-capacity Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is in need of restoration if it is to be deemed eligible to host matches at EURO 2032.
Brand-new Stadiums
Whilst plans for brand-new stadiums are underway in Milan and Rome the authorities in the South of Italy plan to renovate the Stadio Maradona rather than knock it down and start from scratch.
Publicly-funded
Bringing the Stadio Maradona up to the required standards for it to host games at EURO 2032 is expected to come at a cost of €200m. This will be largely publicly-funded given that the stadium is owned by the City Council and not by Napoli itself.
Municipal Funds
The City Council in Naples, led by the Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi, has authorized the investment of €50m of Municipal funds to go towards the redevelopment of the Stadio Maradona. This is on top of the €150m that has been allocated by the Regional Council of Campania (administrative region of Italy).
