The redevelopment project for the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples (Italy) recently received the first crucial administrative approval.

The goal is to transform the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium into a modern, sustainable facility that complies with the international standards required to host major sporting acts.

‘Chronicles of Campania’ stated that the Decisional Services Conference called to examine the Technical and Economic Feasibility Study (PFTE) for the modernization of the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium has reached at a conclusion thus marking a crucial step forward in the process of nominating Naples as a host city for the 2032 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Football Championship.

The 54,732-capacity Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is a large multipurpose stadium in Naples, Italy.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the governing body of football in Europe and one of FIFA’s six continental confederations for association football consisting of 55 national associations.

The 2032 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Football Championship, commonly referred to as the UEFA EURO 2032 or simply EURO 2032, will be the 19^th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior Men’s national teams of its Member associations. Italy and Türkiye will host the tournament which is expected to take place between June and July 2032.

‘Chronicles of Campania’ further stated that with the management decision arrived at the end of the above exercise all the Municipal offices and the entities involved expressed satisfaction on the urban planning procedure, the environmental quotient, the safety factor, and the mobility aspects thus allowing the administration to meet the deadlines set by the UEFA.

Redevelopment Master Plan

The above approval represents the culmination of a process that began in April 2025 with the presentation of the redevelopment master plan coordinated by the Department of Infrastructure and Mobility.

The project was subsequently integrated with the City Council resolutions as regards the redevelopment of the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium’s third tier and the energy efficiency improvements.

Strategic Projects

Also crucial is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on April 9^th, 2026, between the Campania Region and the Municipality of Naples aimed at financing and implementing a series of strategic projects for the city and its main sports facility.

Technical Work

The technical work was also supported by the dialog which took place between July 2025 and June 2026 between the Municipal offices, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the UEFA EURO 2032 Organising Committee.

The dossier must be submitted to the UEFA by July 31^st.

The next step will be to submit all the required documentation to the FIGC and the UEFA by the end of the month. The Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi will then officially present the project while the Municipality’s technical team will proceed with the detailed design and the activities necessary to begin construction.

‘Synergistic Effort’

The Infrastructure Councilor Edoardo Cosenza expressed satisfaction over the above exercise and emphasized that the Municipality had fully respected the planned schedule – “The City of Naples is fully adhering to the proposed timeline. We are ready to submit the approved project to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the UEFA by July 31^st along with all the documentation required of candidate cities to host EURO 2032. The project is the result of a synergistic effort between engineering and architecture.”

The entire development underscores the fact that Naples has consolidated its position to join the select group of five Italian cities that, along with Türkiye, will host the 2032 European Football Championship.
