Mark Fenwick - Senior Partner, Fenwick Iribarren Architects, Spain

Mark Fenwick

Mark Fenwick is Senior Partner of Fenwick Iribarren Architects, based in Madrid for the past 32 years.

The practice has grown over the years to become one of the largest architectural practices in Spain, in the top five, and participates in many distinguished national and international projects.

In recent years the office has become leaders in Football Stadium design and is fast becoming one of the main international architectural practices with expertise in Sports Architecture.

Fenwick Iribarren began their incursion in Sport´s Architecture when they won an international competition for the new RCD Espanyol stadium in Barcelona in 2005, winner of the Stadium venue award for Best World Sports Venue in 2009 and for the Best Stadium in The Spanish First Division in 2012. This stadium has also been object of study by the UEFA who uses it as a “model centre” for its KISS program for the 52 European national federations.

In 2004 Fenwick Iribarren were commissioned to develop the new Valencia CF stadium for 75.000 spectators. The impressive design of the stadium received the approval of national and international entities.

Mark Fenwick is author of the official UEFA’s book, UEFA Guide to Quality Stadiums, a reference publication in the stadium world. He travels in collaboration with UEFA and FIFA to advise national federations on their events & stadium projects.

Fenwick Iribarren has carried out competitions and stadium projects, developing the Master Plan for the new Real Madrid CF stadium, as specialist consultants on the new Atlético de Madrid stadium, and competitions for the Zaragoza CF, Nastic CF, Málaga CF, and Osasuna CF, among others.

Internationally, FIA were involved in the concept design of the Norwegian National Stadium, the Albanian National Stadium, Casablanca Stadium and the Constantine Stadium.

FIA has had great success in the World Football Cup in Qatar in 2022, winning first the Education City Stadium, with the novelty of being the first architects in the world to develop a totally new cooling system for an open football stadium.

FIA have also won two other stadiums in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the Al Thumama Stadium and the, now famous, 974 Stadium which is the first dismountable and transportable stadium in sports architecture, made with shipping containers.

This makes FIA the “hat trick” architects with three of the eight stadiums in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

As one of the most surprising and original architectural sports projects under way in the world today, Fenwick Iribarren has designed a modern Cameldrome stadium with a movement system where a mobile auditorium allows the spectators to follow the camel race alongside the track, a system which has recently been patented by the State of Qatar.
