The Municipality of Rome has put its foot down on granting public interest status to the redevelopment project of the Stadio Flaminio in Rome, Italy.
‘ROMA’ stated that the Stadio Flaminio project was presented by the water polo club AS Roma Nuoto. The above decision has put the Serie A club SS Lazio in an advantageous position to push forward its goal of making the venue its home ground.
The 24,973-capacity Stadio Flaminio is a stadium in Rome (Italy). It lies along the Via Flaminia, three kilometers Northwest of the City Center, 300 meters away from the Parco di Villa Glori (public park in Rome). The interior spaces include a covered swimming pool, rooms for fencing, amateur wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, and gymnastics.
The SS Lazio is an Italian professional sports club based in Rome (Italy) most known for its football team. The club plays in the Serie A and have spent most of their history in the top tier of Italian football. The 70,634-capacity Stadio Olimpico in Rome serves as their home field. The top-flight wants to make the Stadio Flaminio their permanent home.
The Council adopted a unanimous resolution on the above and the resolution read, “The proposal does not define the primary function for which the structure was built – the stadium. It does not specifically mention that the stadium will be able to host national and international events and weakens the venue’s position as a cultural attraction center.”
‘ROMA’ further stated that the resolution added, “The proposal weakens the functionality of the Stadio Flaminio by virtue of reduction in the number of seats from the original 42,000 to 7,500 and the introduction of commercial spaces with a network consisting of a 2,500 square meter sales structure and other sales areas.”
The resolution concluded, “From a large stadium of national interest the Stadio Flaminio would have been transformed into a multipurpose facility with multiple sporting events planned which would rob the pristine sheen of the facility, a precious legacy of the 1960 Olympics.”
