Stadio Flaminio project makes next step Image: Lazio

The Serie A team SS Lazio unveiled an ambitious proposal in December 2024 to renovate the Stadio Flaminio in Rome, Italy. Things have moved a step forward.

‘THE Sun’ stated that an abandoned 30,000-seater Olympic stadium (Stadio Flaminio) could become the new home of a European giant after a £332million revamp project was given the green light.

The driving force behind Stadio Flaminio’s rebuild is none other than Claudio Lotito, the President of SS Lazio, one of the biggest names in Serie A football. His plan, which is expected to cost £332m, is now off the ground after being approved by Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

The SS Lazio is an Italian professional sports club based in Rome, Italy, which plays in the Serie A and have spent most of their history in the top tier of Italian football.

The Stadio Olimpico is an Italian multipurpose sports venue located in Rome, Italy. Seating over 70,000 spectators, it is the largest sports facility in Rome and the second-largest in Italy after the 75,817-capacity San Siro in Milan, Italy. It serves as the home arena of the SS Lazio.

The 30,000-capacity Stadio Flaminio is a stadium in Rome, Italy. It lies along the Via Flaminia, three kilometers Northwest of the City Center, 300 meters away from the Parco di Villa Glori (park in Rome). The facility was built for the 1960 Olympic Games.

‘THE Sun’ further stated that however, years of disrepair and decay saw the arena end up completely abandoned.

As well as athletics, it had also been used for rugby and even music concerts.

And the Stadio Flaminio’s decline into obscurity left the locals upset.

However, in 2021, Lotito put forward a plan to rebuild the stadium to its former glory. He proposed to revamp the arena into a modern-day 40,000-seater behemoth.

And now the dream is on for his top-flight team to make it their permanent home. Lotito hopes once Stadio Flaminio is complete the Lazio could end up playing there full-time.

Maintained Mayor Gualtieri, “I think the Flaminio stadium project is beautiful and worthy of support.”

As well as repairing the pitch and the stadium itself, the Lazio boss Lotito also plans to transform the surrounding area into a multisport facility.

There are amazing plans to house an Olympic-sized swimming pool under the stadium – as well as an ice rink and four tennis courts.

While the field itself would also be used for women’s football and rugby matches with the prospect of the Italian national team returning there one day.
